Midgets even up OMHA series
Evan Chaffe’s second period goal and some stellar penalty
killing were keys for the Terry’s Auto Service Midgets, who squared their
best-of-five ‘CC’ series at 1-1 with Minto on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Mitchell killed off two separate two-man disadvantages, one
in the first period and another late in the second, just after Chaffe’s tip-in
goal with three minutes to go in the middle period.
Mitchell killed three separate penalties in the third, including a four-minute infraction, with Tyler Meinen standing tall to record the shutout, aided by the yeoman duty on defence and the tenacious penalty killers.
In the series opener last Monday, Jan. 12 in Mitchell, the Mad Dogs snapped a 3-3 deadlock with two goals 2:16 apart early in the third period en route to a 6-3 win over the hosts.
Cooper Preszcator, Jared Sykes and Chaffe scored for Mitchell, while Jordan Mabb had two assists, including a beauty pass which sprung Chaffe for his breakaway marker nine minutes into the opening period.
Game 3 is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 19 at 9:15 p.m., while Game 4 is set for Wednesday, Jan. 21 in Harriston at 9 p.m. Game 5, if necessary, will be back in Mitchell Sunday, Jan. 25 at 9 p.m.
In WOAA group playoff news, Mitchell will play a home-and-home set in the Cruickshank Division with Goderich and Saugeen Shores. That surviving team will face either BCH, Minto or Chatsworth for the division championship.
