Mitchell Legion Peewee LL win Consolation final in Mooretown Rise up Cup
Hard work and playing a team game leads Mitchell to Consolation victory in Mooretown

In the opening game, the Peewee squad came out strong by defeating Port Stanley 6-2.  Calum Harris opening the tournament scoring with Tyler Scherbarth getting the assist.  Zach Huygen added to the goal total with a wrister from the slot from passes from Bradley Dearing and Nolan Vessie.  Dearing put in goal a few minutes later form a Colby Ryan pass.  Port Stanley came back with two quick goals, but Ryan Hubbard danced through the Port Stanley defence to make it 4-2 by the end of the first.  Payton Wood and Ryan got the assists on the goal.  From there on out it was all Mitchell as Wade Campbell capitalized on a pass from Jeromy Vandewalle in the second period and Hubbard put the game out of hand in the third off a Jaxen Hartwig pass to put the locals up 6-2.  Mitchell would win that game 6-2.

In the next round robin game, Mitchell took on Port Edward.  Port Edward would open the scoring in the first and it would stay that way until Hubbard and Wood would connect to tie the game up.  From that point on, it would be Port Edward getting the best of the Mitchell team.  Port Edward wins 4-1.

In the third game of the day, the boys took on Sarnia Sabres (teal) team.  In a very physical and tight checking game it saw Sarnia that opened the scoring by scoring the first two goals in the first period.  Zach Bilyea scored for the locals with a seeing eye shot from the slot.  Hubbard would tie the game at 2 with a short-handed marker shortly after.  Sarnia would score on the powerplay to go up 3-2.  Bilyea would tie the game with under a minute left to lift the team to a tie with Sarnia 3-3 and that’s the way the game would end.

In the only game of the day for the Peewee’s on Saturday, Mitchell would take on the hometown Mooretown team to see who would go onto to semi-finals.  The first period would be tight checking and fast paced with both team unable to score a goal.  Hubbard would get the Peewee’s on the board in the second and he would add another goal a couple minutes later to put Mitchell up 2-0 at the end of the second.  In the third, Hubbard would complete the hat trick with assists from Hartwig and Wood.   That would be all the team would need as the defence of Hartwig, Wood, Liam Brodhagen and Jake Crowley would shut down Mooretown for the victory and a birth in the semi-finals.  Ethan Dearing stood tall for the boys collecting the shutout in the victory.

In the semi-final game, Mitchell would take on their rivals down on Hwy 8, the Seaforth Stars.  Mitchell would give the Stars their first deficit of the tournament by scoring the first goal off the stick of Hubbard.  From there on, it was all Seaforth as they cam away with the victory and a birth in the finals by a score of 8-1.

In the consolation finals, the Legion Peewee’s would take on Sarnia Sabres (grey).  The first period saw lots of shots on the Sarnia net and keep good pressure on the Sarnia team but the boys would end the period at a scoreless draw.  Hubbard would opening the scoring in the first minute of the second with a pass from Huygen.  Sarnia would tie the game a 1-1 later on in the in the period.  Hubbard and Huygen would connect again to put the locals up 2-1 and that’s who the second period would end.  Sarnia would tie the game up early in the third at 2-2.  Hubbard would get his second hat trick of the tournament on a pass from Wood late in the third to give Mitchell the Consolation Championship.
