The Thompson Atom AE’s closed out their OMHA second round series with two straight wins against a tough Wingham team. In Wingham on February 5 the AE’s pulled out a tough win in a back-and-forth battle. Spencer Boyce opened the scoring for Mitchell early in the first period with assists from Daniel Reidy and Xavier Lorentz. Wingham tied it up a couple of minutes later. Mitchell retook the lead late in the first with a goal from Jamie Feltz.
Mitchell stretched the lead to 3-1 in the second with a goal from Damen Roobroeck with Lorentz getting the assist. Wingham narrowed the lead to one with a minute left in the second. Coulter Rolph restored the two-goal lead early in the third. Wingham fought back once again with two goals two minutes apart in the middle of the third. Wingham put the pressure on with a goal with just over five minutes remaining. The Thompson AE’s would not quit and sent the game into overtime with a goal by Lorentz, assisted by Boyce. The overtime was a back-and-forth affair before PJ Marshall was able to score the overtime winner with a wrap around goal, with the assist going to Rolph. Charlie Wood recorded the win.
The Thompson Atom AE’s finished out the series at home on Saturday Feb. 7 with a solid 7-2 win. Wingham opened the scoring midway through the first. Mitchell tied the score on an unassisted goal by Roobroeck. Mitchell then took control of the game with three second period goals by Evan MacArthur, Rolph and Boyce. Feltz got the assist on Rolph’s goal. Rolph and Drew Partridge earned the assists on Boyce’s goal. Wingham tried to respond with a second period goal but that was as close as they would get as the Thomspon AE’s would score another three goals in the third to put the game out of reach. Boyce added another goal from Partridge and Marshall, Andrew Van Bakel notched one from Rolph and Roobroeck and Marshall finished the scoring on an assist from Boyce. Austin Weir earned the win.
