Peewee Girls Off to OWHA Provincials
The VanGerwen Sunlife Peewee girls coached by Richard Boyce are off to the provincials in Ottawa from April 4-7. The girls came out on top of the 5 team round robin with the most points.† The first game saw Mitchell go head to head with Stratford. In a nail biter, Mitchell was able to take the lead early and kept the lead for most of the game. Rachel Stephan was a back checking force against the strong Stratford squad. Jordyn Elgie fought her way through traffic and made multiple attempts to set up her teammates for scoring opportunities.†

Marley Baillie used the boards effectively to avoid the Stratford defense and got the puck deep into the Stratford end. However, with the time ticking down, Stratford was able to score and finish the game in a 2-2 tie. Against league rivals Milverton Royals, a game where either team could be victorious, as each team has done all season, by winning a handful of games apiece.† Against the feisty squad,† Mitchell left it all on the ice and forced that puck down the ice and just kept putting the puck in the net. Kendra Earl was in front of the net and was all over the puck when it was loose trying to capitalize. Maia Moore was strong on both offense and defense. The final score was Mitchell 5 Milverton 2. The Brussels-Blyth team came ready to play. Sarah Skinner skated with some fancy footwork and puck handling, setting up her teammates to make sure their was a positive outcome. Elysha Vorstenbosch played her position well and was always at the right place at the right time to capitalize on play in the opponents end. The Mitchell Meteors were also a dominating force on the ice and came out with the win 3-0. Breann Schoonderwoerd found the opening to the net and just kept putting the puck in it. She scored three times for a hat trick. Olivia Boyce also found the back of the net twice. Lyric Huygen covered her check to keep the puck out of the Mitchell end. Jordan Ford played broke up rushes and scoring opportunities for the BCH Ice Dogs. Final score, Mitchell wins 7-1. Mitchell goaltender Makayla Meinen was on the injured list for the round robin tournament and the Mitchell Meteors would like to thank Julia and Lauren for standing tall between the pipes in Makaylaís absence. The Lucknow Sepoys withdrew from the round robin tournament mid way through the series. The †Mitchell team lead the points race with a tie and two wins which was enough to clench the southern region berth to the OWHA Provincial tournament in Ottawa. The second place team in the provincial region, Milverton was given the opportunity to capture the wild card spot and play the second place team from the north. Milvertonís hopes were dashed as the team from the north took the wild card spot.† As Coach Richard Boyce enters the Provincial tournament he stated that ìThis is a good group of girls who will try hard and will do well if they play their best.î Defensive Coach Joe Schoonderwoerd mentioned that, ìIf we do everything at Provincials that we did to qualify, the girls will do well.î Best of luck to the 2012/2013 Mitchell Meteor Peewee Girls team at Provincials this weekend.
