Peewee Girls Capture GOLD in Mitchell Tourney
Van Gerwen Financial Mitchell Peewee Girls had a stellar weekend winning 2 out of 3 games in pool play and went on to beat The Milverton Royals in the finals on Sunday. Read on for all the details.

 Thursday October 18, 2012 against Milverton It was a nail biter. The game was scoreless until the third period, even though the Mitchell squad peppered the Milverton goalie with shots throughout the first two periods. At the beginning of the third, Milverton was able to find the twine and scored early on. With just over three minutes left in the game, Milverton secured their lead and scored again. Mitchell came out fired up. Thirty seconds after Milverton made the score two nil, defender Maia Moore side stepped the Milverton defense and fired the puck over the goalie's glove to narrow the gap. On the very next shift, another Mitchell defencemen Breann Schoonderwoerd took a pass from centre Jordan Ford and Olivia Boyce and tied the game at two a piece. Milverton wasn't finished yet. On a break away, Mitchell goalie Makayla Meinen found herself facing down the Milverton's centre who fired a rocket to the top corner to reclaim the lead. With four of the five goals scored in the last three and a half minutes of the game, it was a close one.
Saturday morning saw the team back in action against Petrolia Oilers. Again the Mitchell team came out strong and saw most of the action occur in the Oiler end, although the Oiler goalie was hot and kept their team in the game. At the start of the third period a Mitchell shot was finally able to sneak past the goalie. Their was a scramble in front of the Oiler net and Elysha Vorstnebosch was able to bury the puck into the net off the stick of Jordyn Elgie. Thirty seconds later, with the Meteors still feeling the excitement from scoring, Rachael Stephan found Elgie in the clear near the net. Elgie took a hard shot and surprised the goalie as it bounced off the goalie's stick on the short side to bounce into the net. Jordyn was celebrating before the goalie and official knew what had happened. As the game was winding down with less than two minutes to play, Mitchell let down their guard and Petrolia saw their opening. Petrolia was on a power play and scored their lone goal of the game. The game ended with a Mitchell win 2-1. 
The third game was against a scrappy Ingersoll squad. Both teams needed a win to advance to the finals. Within the first minute of play, ingersoll found a opening and buried the puck in the Mitchell net. Mitchell kept on fighting to bring the puck to the Ingersoll end and create opportunities. The first goal for the itchell team came at the beginning of the second period. The goal came off the stick of an Ingersoll player surprising the Ingersoll goalie. After the first goal was in, Mitchell was back in the game.

Within the first minute of play, ingersoll found a opening and buried the puck in the Mitchell net. Mitchell kept on fighting to bring the puck to the Ingersoll end and create opportunities. The first goal for the Mitchell team came at the beginning of the second period. The goal came off the stick of an Ingersoll player surprising the Ingersoll goalie. After the first goal was in, Mitchell was back in the game. A few minutes later, Jordyn Elgie passed the puck from the corner out to Elysha Vorstnebosch who then backhanded the puck into the open side passed the goalie. Ingersoll answered back tying it up at two apiece less than twenty seconds later. Mitchell was just getting started. Closing out the third period, Olivia Boyce found Vanessa Meinen behind the net, who then passed the puck to the waiting stick of Lyric Huygen who slid the puck through the five hole as the goalie slid across the crease. Mitchell continued to increase their lead at the beginning of the third period. Sarah Skinner picked the pocket of Ingersoll's forward and fired off a shot and netted her own rebound. Ingersoll answered back with their third goal, bringing the score to 4-3 for Mitchell. Ten seconds later, Vorstnebosh was off to the side and slap shotted the puck to bury it in the Ingersoll net, bringing Mitchell back to a two goal lead. Winger Marley Baillie was a key playmaker by continuously getting the puck out of the Mitchell end and creating opportunities for the Meteors. With ten minutes of regulation time still to play, Rachael Stephan passed the Puck to Breann Schooderwoerd in the neutral zone and deeked the Ingersoll squad and found the puck in the back of the net, lengthening the lead 6-3. Ingersoll scored once more, but for Ingersoll, their time ran out and Mitchell won the game sending the team to the finals on Sunday.Finals against Milverton Royals
Sunday's final brought Milverton and Mitchell head to head for the fourth time this season. The energy in the dressing rooms was pure excitement. The game was evenly matched with play going strong in both directions. Mitchell took an early lead with two goals in the first, both scored by Schooderwoerd.  Her first goal was a sniper shot to the top corner with assists from Elgie and Vanessa Meinen. The second goal was a pass from Elgie and Schooderwoerd took a hard shot and got her own rebound on the far open side. Jordan ford, in the second period broke through the traffic, and was on a break away. She got the puck through the five hole as the goalie slide across the net to face the shot. Winger Kendra Earl, was in the right place at the right time and was strong on her stick to break up the play in her own end and send play out to the neutral zone. The Mitchell Meteors kept up their energy level throughout the whole game. Mitchell goalie Makayla Meinen faced many shots, including deflecting a hard shot off the edge of her glove, making the save. The Milverton Royals opened their scoring in the third period. The Royals were able to sneak the puck past Makayla Meinen twice in the third, with the final sore 3-2. Vangerwen Financial peewee girls were champions. Head Coach Richard Boyce said "the girls worked hard from buzzer to buzzer and every member of the team contributed to the wins for the weekend. An excellent effort by all."
