Peewee Girls Played Their Hearts Out
Ottawa, ON - Game one of the OWHA Peewee girls C playoffs in Ottawa took place last weekend. The VanGerwen Peewees went to the capital city to play their first game Thursday April 4. The Sarnia Sting came out strong and didn't let up. The Mitchell Meteors struggled to get into game speed after a month without opponents to play. The Meteors fell to a 5-0 loss.
But, Friday was a different story. Mitchell was ready.

The Hamilton Hawks had a slow first period which Mitchell took full advantage and spent most of the first period in the Hamilton zone. The Meteors scored midway through the first to get them on the board. Jordan Elgie bulged the twine as the puck was in the back of the net. While a scrum took place in front of the Hamilton net, the Mitchell players were all over the puck and found an opening bring the score up to 2-0 with the puck being pushed in by Jordan Elgie once again. Jordan Ford broke up some Hamilton plays causing the Hamilton squad to get frustrated. Maia Moore came off the Mitchell bench to the blue line where she found the puck out in the open. She wound up and let a wrist shot fly to the top left corner of the net lengthening their lead to 3-0. Mitchell relaxed for a moment and Hamilton came on strong and was able to narrow the lead to 3-1. Hamilton had a spring in their step and scored their second with a scramble at the net. Rachael Stephan stood strong on the blue line and kept the puck deep in the Hamilton end. Marley Baillie made a timely pass to Breeann Schoonderwoerd who took off and scored the 4th goal for the team.  Hamilton wasn't finished yet as they scored again. Final score 4-3 giving Mitchell the win. Defense coach Joe Schoonderwoerd told the girls to "play hard and leave it all on the ice."
It was do or die for both teams in game three. Mitchell was up against the feisty Ingersoll Ice squad. Mitchell was able to score in the first period on a coast to coast for Breeann Schoonderwoerd. Her shot went high and the goalie didn't have a chance. The second period was a draw with exciting action in both ends of the rink. Kendra Earl broke up a big rush from an Ingersoll player in the neutral zone while Olivia Boyce was on fire for the entire game playing exceptional offense and defense. Sarah Skinner made multiple attempts to get the puck into scoring position, but the Ingersoll goalie stood her ground and Mitchell couldn't find any openings. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the second period. Goalie Makayla Meinen snatched a glove save out of the air to rob the Ingersoll player of a goal. Elysha Vorstenbosch fought hard at the boards for loose pucks to set up the Meteors for scoring opportunities. Lyric Huygen made some strong chips off the boards to get the puck out of the Mitchell end. Early in the third period, Ingersoll found an opening and tied it up at one apiece. Late in the period as the clock was ticking down, Ingersoll scored the go ahead goal and then put in an insurance goal. Final score 3-1. After a disappointing game for the girls, coach Richard Boyce told the girls "to hold their head up high as you outplayed the Ingersoll team."
