73rd Annual Young Canada Week Tournament
Over the March break week your E&F Masonry Inc. Mitchell Meteors entered the 73rd Annual Young Canada Week Tournament in Goderich ON with all games taking place at the Maitland Recreation Center.
This years Tournament saw six team entries being the Mid Huron Huskies, Wingham Ironmen, Huron Bruce Blizzard, South Huron Sabres, Kincardine Kinucks and the Mitchell Meteors.

Mitchell and Huron Bruce Blizzard would draw the first game action of the tournament on Thursday, March 14th with a 9:00am game start time.  Huron Bruce Blizzard are from the WOAA North Division and finished third in regular season play with a record of 13 wins 5 loses and 2 ties.  Mitchell being from the South Division had not yet faced the Blizzard but came out strong ready to play.  In the first period Rogan Catalan would strike first from a nice pass from Charlie Wolfe to put the Meteors up 1 to 0.  Late in the first the Blizzard would find the net to end the first period at 1 to 1.  In the second period Jonah Gibbings would strip the puck from the Blizzard not once but twice to give Mitchell a 3 to 1 lead.  The third period would see Mitchell close the game down with a strong defensive effort from Colby Ryan, Brock Boville, Zack Siemon-Hergott, Hayden Beuermann and a dominate performance from Aedan McCann in net.

Mitchell's second game of the tournament would be later that Thursday afternoon at 5:45 versus the Kincardine Kinucks.  The Meteors had also not seen regular season action with the North division Kinucks.  There record was not as favorable going 5-12-3 through regular season play.  Mitchell would have an offensive explosion in this game led off by Tyler Scherbarth (unassisted), then Jonah Gibbings (asst., Max Hannon), Charlie Wolfe (asst., Brock Boville, Tyler Scherbarth) to end the first period 3 to 0.  In the second period Wade Campbell (asst., Brock Boville) would start the scoring followed by Jonah Gibbings adding his second of the game (Asst., Zack Siemon-Hergott) ending the second period 5 to 0.  In the third period, the Kinucks would add a goal only to see Tyler Scherbarth add his second of the game (Asst., Colby Ryan), followed By Jonah Gibbings completing the hat trick (asst., Max Hannon) to end the game with a 7 to 1 victory.

Mitchells third game of the tournament would come Friday, March 15th, 2024 at 4:30pm against the Mid Huron Huskies.  The Huskies are well know to the Meteors with at tie and a Mitchell win in regular season, followed by a loss and a win in playoff action.  The Meteors were prepared for a battle and tight game as the previous four had gone.  Wade Campbell would open the scoring on a feed from Charlie Wolfe to put Mitchell up 1 to 0.  Next, killing a penalty, Jack Miller (asst., Rogan Catalan) would score short handed.  Followed up by another short Handed goal, this time from Charlie Wolfe.  It would stay 3 to 0 when in the third Wade Campbell (Asst., Colby Ryan) would put Mitchell up 4 to 0, followed by Jack Miller (Asst., Hayden Beuermann), Carson Paulen (Asst., Jack Miller) and Jack Miller's second of the game (Asst., Rogan Catalan).   Aedan McCann would once again deliver a strong performance with 3 goals against through the first three games of the tournament.

Going into championship play the Meteors finished top of the pool with 3 wins, 6 points, 17 goals for and 3 goals against.  The Semi Finals would see Mitchell face of against Huron Bruce Blizzard on Saturday March 16th, at 10:15am.  Mitchell was ready once again and would start it off with Tyler Scherbarth (asst., Rogan Catalan), then Jonah Gibbings would add 2 unassisted goals putting Mitchell up 3 to 0.   Later Wade Campbell (Asst., Jack Miller) and Tyler Scherbath's second of the game (asst., Rogan Catalan) would ice this one 5 to 0.  Aedan McMann would go on to record the shut out which would be Aedan's ninth on the season.

The Championship game was on for 4:30pm against the Mid Huron Huskies as they defeated the Wingham Ironmen in their semi-finals round.  Your Meteors would put up a great effort in this one with strong defensive play and Aedan standing tall in net.  However, the only goal in this one would come from a pass from Griffin Bree from behind the net to Max Hannon out front to put Mitchell up 1 to 0.  The Huskies would go on to add a goal in the second and third period to take the Championship game 2 to 1.

The Meteor's entered three tournaments this season and this was their second runner-up finish with the other being eliminated in semi-final play.  This was a very successful tournament performance on the season and players, coaches, trainers and parents are all proud.
