Meteors Win London Devilettes Tournament
The GC Financial U-18 "C" girls took home the Gold at the London Devilettes 33rd Annual Tournament held this past weekend with some timely scoring and nail biting action.

Mitchell opened the tournament Friday night against league rival Wilmot Wolverines in a back and forth affair which came down to the wire.  While trailing 1-0, Mitchell pulled the goalie and with 19 seconds left,  Claire McCorkindale scored from a hard angle on a beautiful behind the net pass from Brooklyn Boville to salvage the tie and 1 point.

The second game was equally as exciting as we took on the tournament hosts, London.  The game was scoreless until Andrea Kelly netted one to start the 3rd with assists going to Casey Bernard and McCorkindale.  Shortly after, London came back to tie the game and kept pressing to try to take the lead but netminder Kora Smith held her ground, stopping a breakaway with 3:30 left in the game.  London would eventually take the lead with with 2:09 to go but once again with the goalie pulled, McCorkindale scored to tie the game.  This time with 46 seconds left and again the girls gained a point.

In a must win 3rd game the girls played the Livonia Knights, a team from Michigan and came out flying.  Haileigh Templeman opened the scoring at 4:36 of the first with a power play goal and the girls never looked back as they skated to a 9-0 route.  Jade Huygen had the hot hand and finished with a goal and 7 assists.  Other scorers were McCorkindale (2), Kelly(2),Josie Walker(2) and Maggie McCarthy.  Assists went to Brook French (3), Gemmell(3),
Walker, Templeman, and  Casey Bernard.  Goalie Shawni DeJong posted the shutout while the defense of McCarthy, Gemmell, Jordyn Crawford, Peyton VanderKuylen, Alexis Gettler  and Ally DeJong controlled our end and would not let the opponents get comfortable anywhere on the ice.

The Meteors took on the Lambton Attack in a game that had a finish that was very intense for the fans.  The Attack took the lead at 7:44 of the first and held that lead until the 3rd when Huygen took a nice pass from Brooklynn Boville and went top shelf to tie the game and eventually force 3 on 3 sudden death overtime.  In the extra frame, Huygen battled defenders down the side boards and forced her way to the net to score the game winner sending Mitchell to the finals.

Once again, Mitchell faced the Wilmot Wolverines and both teams came out determined to win the Gold.
Boville opened the scoring at 1:44 of the first period when she stole the puck in the neutral zone and went in on a breakaway to score.   A minute later, McCorkindale stole the puck in the offensive zone and netted another for a shorthanded goal to put Mitchell up 2-0.  Casey Bernard then jumped on a rebound to score with assists going to VanderKuylen and Templeman.  Kaylyn Klumper made it 4-0 when she drove home a rebound on an Ally DeJong point shot.  Shortly after, Klumper made a nice pass to Boville to send her on a breakaway for her second goal of the game and give the Meteors the 5-0 win.  Maddy Bernard who was battling some injuries, was back in the lineup for the final and gave the defense corps an added boost.  The goaltending duo of Shawni DeJong and Kora Smith both combined for the shutout in the final.

Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff on the great tournament.
