Mitchell Meteors U13 LL Sweep Regional Silverstick
The Mark Bannon Backhoe Mitchell Meteors U13 LL team travelled to Collingwood this past weekend to participate in the annual Silverstick tournament - a highly competitive weekend of hockey.
In round robin play, the Meteors were undefeated as they faced Wingham (6-3 win), Lucan (4-1 win) and Collingwood (8-1 win). This earned them first place in their pool and advanced them to the semi-final game to be played against Saugeen Shores Storm.
Mitchell took an early lead against Saugeen Shores. Back and forth scoring followed until Saugeen Shores tied it up 4-4 in the third period. The score remained tied up until Keith Linton snuck 3 goals past the opposing goaltender in the last 5 minutes of play. The final score was 7-4 for the Mark Bannon Mitchell Meteors U13 LL squad and they were headed to the finals.
The Meteors faced the Listowel Cyclones in the finals on Sunday afternoon. Michael Coyne found the top corner for the first and only goal of the first period. Dylan Dietrich (from Henry Schoonderwoerd) netted one in the second period. Schoonderwoerd earned himself another point with an unassisted goal. The score was 3-0 for the Meteors after 10 minutes of play. The third period put Listowel on the scoreboard, but Mitchell answered back when Hayden DeJong tipped in a shot from Dietrich. Grey McKay took a pass from Reegan Vessie and found the back of the net. McKay got another quick goal to end the game with a 6-2 win.
Strong offensive and defensive efforts, outstanding goaltending, and some great coaching all contributed to the undefeated record for the weekend. Team members include: Landon Glauser, Taitum Vessie, Greg McKay, Henry Schoonderwoerd, Hayden DeJong, Brayden Baxter, Deni Beaudin, Dylan Dietrich, Michael Coyne, Trayton Keyser, Weston Bannon, Carson Vosper, Keith Linton, Jones McLaughlin, Reegan Vessie, Liam Baker, and Simon Jenson. Coaches Curtis Vessie, Pat Coyne, Craig Bannon, and Josh Beaudin.
