Novice Boys Pull Out a Win In Consolation Finals
The Mitchell Novice Rep boys played 3 tough games Thursday rounding out a 2 tournament week that saw them playing 8 games in 8 days.  Although the scores don't reflect the effort, Mitchell played amazing each game and ended up taking the Consolation Championship!

The day started with a game against the South Huron Sabres. The scoring opened early in the first when the Sabres got one by net minder, Charlie Wood.  Minutes later, Nicholas Houben answered back with an unassisted rocket shot to tie the game.  The next goal didn't come until half way through the second period when Seth Huygen found the back of the net after a pass from Houben.  Seconds later, South Huron scored to tie the game.  The play went end to end in this exciting match.  With less than a minute left in the second period, the Sabres scored an eventual game winner as Mitchell just couldn't get one past their goalie.  Mitchell played a great game right until the dying seconds.  Great try boys!
Game #2 was played against BCH.  The visitors hit the scoreboard first going top shelf on Wood.  Less than a minute later, BCH netted another goal and it looked as though they were running away with the game leading 2-0 to end the first.  After what must have been quite the pep talk, the boys came out in the second period ready to get on the scoreboard.  Brett Poirier was the first to break the BCH shutout with a beautiful goal while Houben notched another assist on the day.  After a hard fought 4 minutes, Huygen tucked away an unassisted  goal to tie the game at 2.  BCH answered back with a goal to take the lead but it was short lived as Houben found the back of the net while Justin Morrison got the assist.  The second period ended in a 3-3 tie.  The Meteors came out flying in the third and Connor MacLean notched his first goal of the day while Poirier got the assist. Just over a minute later, Mitchell widened the lead when Connor Lockhart scored an unassisted goal to bring the game to 5-3.  BCH answered back with 2 quick goals and tied the game forcing sudden death overtime.  The boys fought hard during overtime but eventually lost the match as BCH rocketed one past Wood on a power play goal.  This was one of the best matches I've seen the boys play.  Way to go Mitchell!!
With the 2 losses, Mitchell went into the Consolation round against the South Huron Sabres who they'd lost against earlier in the day.  Lockhart was the first to get Mitchell on the scoreboard with a nice goal on a pass from MacLean.  The boys ended the period up 1-0.  The second period went end to end and goaltender Wood was called on to make a number of great saves to keep the boys in the game.  Just over 3 minutes left in the period, Houben intercepted a pass in front of the Sabres net and made no mistake as he went top corner on the surprised Sabres goalie.  Before the period ended, South Huron broke Wood's shutout and managed to find the back of the net to end the second period with Mitchell still leading 2-1. Just 20 seconds into the third period, the Sabres tied the game at 2.  The third period continued, end to end with both goalies making key saves but it was Mitchell who would break the tie on a goal by Houben, assisted by Brayden Vosper and Lockhart.  With Mitchell up 3-2, South Huron pulled their goalie to get an extra attacker out.  The boys continued to fight hard with the defense shutting the Sabres down, time and time again.  With less than a minute left in the game, Joey Adam got the puck to Houben who slid it down the ice, dead center in the back of the open net to get his hat trick and secure a Mitchell Hawks Cup Consolation Final win!!  Nicholas Houben was named team MVP. Way to go Nicholas!  What a great day of hockey boys!!  You all fought hard, worked together and each played a huge part in a great tournament!  Way to go Mitchell!!!!

Reminder: Practice Tuesday January 8th at 5 p.m. in Mitchell.  Short parent meeting to follow!
