Peewee Girls Advance to Second Round of Playoffs
The J.P. Uniac Insurance Peewee B Girls advanced to the second round of the LLFHL playoffs with a dramatic overtime win over the West Oxford Inferno.
On Sunday the Meteors hosted West Oxford in the final game of the first round of playoffs. Mitchell went into the game leading in points, 3-1 in the first-to-4 points format. A regulation tie or win would secure the series win but the Inferno would not go down lightly. West Oxford opened the scoring with 3:41 left in the first but Mitchell tied it up one minute later on a goal from Andrea Kelly with assists going to Brooklynn French and Aubrey Vosper.
The game remained tied until West Oxford sneaked one through to take the lead midway through the third and held on for the regulation win.
The result meant that both teams were tied in points which set up a dramatic 4 on 4, 10 minute sudden death overtime period to declare a series winner.
Overtime had everyone on edge as the teams exchanged chances for most of the period. With time winding down in the extra frame, Hayden Uniac got the puck down the ice deep in the opponents end while Brooklyn Boville took over battling hard against two defenders behind the Inferno net. Breaking loose she was able to make a beautiful pass in front to French who buried the game winner and sent the girls into celebration mode.
The girls will now play the London Devilettes in the second round.
On Saturday the girls traveled to Seaforth to play the Huron Heat in the first game of Provincial Playdowns and skated to a 1-1 tie. Boville was able to win a clean draw back to the point where Alexis Gettler fired a screened shot through everyone for our lone goal. Goaltending and defense took over for both teams, setting this series up to be an exciting one to watch as well.
