Sunday night the Peewee AE’s hosted Blyth-Brussels in what turned out to be the most physical game to date.
Both teams appeared to come out to establish a physical presence resulting in penalties for each side. The first period was scoreless with both net minders holding down the fort respectively.
Mitchell was able to capitalize on a power play midway through the second period when Luke O’Rourke jammed home a lose puck to open the scoring with Steven Bird and Curtis Lockhart assisting. Two and half minutes later Jack O’Rourke fed Tyler Smith at the blue line where Smith was able to get a fine shot through to bulge the twine. Blyth-Brussels would score with just under two minutes left in the period to close the gap to 2-1. The visitors would also take a late penalty which carried over to start the third.
Riley Sykes scored in the first minute of the third period for the Mitchell squad’s second power play goal of the game to make it 3-1 with Brett DeJong drawing the assist. A minute and a half later Quaid Austin took a hit to make a play by feeding Curtis Lockhart in the slot who made no mistake to put the home team up 4-1.
With just over a minute to play in the game Nic Baker and Lockhart teamed up to get the puck to Smith for his second of the game to make it 5-1. Tanner Knechtel and Aaron McNeil came through once again splitting the duties in net with what was undoubtedly their most difficult test of the season.
