SETTING THE STAGE
Article provided by Coach McClure.......................If you were unable to make it to the Mitchell and District Community Centre this past weekend to take in O.M.H.A. action from the Mitchell Hoegy Farm Supply Peewee AE squad you missed out on quite a show.

Inspired from a 4-1 Game 3 win by the Mitchell Atoms over Lambeth, the Peewee boys were ready to prove that we don’t need federal support to make great hosts to our visitors from Hunstville. Starting left winger Kurtis Eisler kicked things off with a motivating performance of our national anthem bringing stage and net presence for the hometown boys. Jacob Laing was able to carry this momentum to a first period lead when his shot alluded the Hunstville keeper low glove side on a Lindstrom-like rush. The boys continued to press into the second frame, but could not increase their lead against a strong Otter netminder.

Before the start of the final frame, early series heroin Tanner Knechtel, performed his best Party Rock dance moves to ignite the hometown crowd. No doubt did it set a buzz around the rink for the support of the boys in white. Huntsville notched things at 1-1 five minutes into the third which set the stage for yet another nail-biter and an extra frame. After Mitchell could not convert on their powerplay opportunities, Huntsville was given an equal opportunity and sent the series to game 4 on a strong rush from an Otter defenceman. Huntsville now had hope and the chance to send the Meteors on the road again with one more win.

Game 4 was played the following day and in the loom of all the singing and dancing, Mitchell knew they had to come back and fight. Goaltending continued to be the source of motivation and entertainment as Aaron McNeil absolutely robbed the Otter offence of several attacks throughout the first period, keeping the damage to only one.

Tyler Smith showed his playoff experience and walked in from the point and patiently waited for the goalie to drop while lifting the puck shortside over his shoulder early in the second and the boys were rolling. While shorthanded, hard work and quick feet allowed Luke O’Rourke to chip the puck past the game 3 hero at the opposing blue line and walk in on a two-on-one rush. Again with patience and poise, O’Rourke faked a shot and feathered a back door feed to Curtis Lockhart who deposited it into the open net. Shortly thereafter, Eisler found Lockhart again on a beautiful Hail Mary pass up the middle which left only him and the goalie. After corralling the puck from his knees, Lockhart was able to get a shot off and stuck with the play long enough to bury his own rebound and double Mitchell’s lead.

Strong penalty killing from Mitchell’s blue collar contingency, lead by Brett DeJong, Quaid Austin and the O’Rourke duo, maintained their two goal lead deep into the third. Hunstville was able to diminish the lead by one during 4 on 4 play, but could not match the intensity of the Mitchell squad.

Mitchell now advances to the O.M.H.A. Final series against Dorchester and is concurrently playing for the League title against Blyth/Brussels. Stay tuned for schedule updates.
