The U13 Meteor Girls went undefeated after 5 games to make
the finals in local Pink on the Rink Tournament.
Martyna Hartwig opened the scoring in Game one vs. St. Marys
Rock. Danica Voros and Phoebe Wood also scored in the first period (assisted by
Elena Schoonderwoerd and Kinslee Horan) to put the Meteors up by three heading
into the second period. St. Marys was able to sneak one by VanBakel to get on
the board. Wood was able to add another assisted by Voros, to seal the game
with a 4-1 victory.
Later that day the Meteors played Bluewater Hawks. Hartwig
opened the scoring on a pass from Voros in the first period. Callie VanLoon
added a goal assisted by Reina Nevin, and Voros would also add a goal directly
from the faceoff in the second period, to put the girls up by three heading
into the third period. Three more goals were added in the third, by Horan from
Voros, one from Hartwig and another from Horan to finish off the 6-0 victory.
Saturdays first game was against the Lucan Irish. The girls
found themselves down buy one goal heading into the third period, but the
Meteors kept the pressure on and resulted in two goals coming from Wood to seal
the 2-1 victory and capture 1st place in their pool of 4 teams.
In the Quarter finals Saturday afternoon, The Ace Garden
Centre Meteor girls faced the tournament hosts South Huron Sabres. A solid team
effort led to the Meteors ousting the Sabres from their home tournament with a
2-0 victory. Sophia VanNes stole the show scoring both goals for the game with
assists coming from Felicity Parish and Dana Poppe as well as Reina Nevin and
Elena Schoonderwoerd. Ally Vanbakel earned her second shutout of the
tournament.
During the semi-final game vs Stratford Aces, the Meteors
had to dig deep to get out of a two-goal deficit part way through the second
period. Voros responded with a goal to keep the Meteors within reach before
heading into the third period. Horan grabbed the tying goal to give the team
hope of heading to the finals, and after an extremely lengthy goal mouth
scramble with sticks and bodies all over the crease, Voros was able to find the
elusive loose puck and squeak it past the goal line to seal the 3-1 victory.
Heading to the finals undefeated against local rivals
Central Perth Predators who were also undefeated would prove to be a very tight
game between the two worthy opponents.
The game was quite tense without a goal from either side on the board heading
into the third period. The predators took the lead, but the Meteors were able
to respond fairly quickly with a goal from Voros, assisted by Hartwig and Ella
Sills. The predators potted another to take the lead once again, but Wood
grabbed the tying goal assisted by Voros to force a 3 on 3 OT.
In OT there were some good chances in both ends, but the
predators were able to break free and net the game winner with a 3-2 victory.
VanBakel played very strong in net, stopping many difficult shots. The Girls
should hold their heads high as they put on a great show for the fans in
arguably the best played game of the season.
