This season will be an intense one for our Peewee Girls #1 team as we are facing a bunch of new teams in a different league that we have no previous history with but our mighty group of Meteors gals are up to the challenge!
Yesterday to open their season they were the dominate bunch on the ice and were victorious over their opponent from Kincardine.
Our season was here and with a couple of exhibition games under our belt and one practice in, we would take on our first of many opponents the Kincardine Kinucks in our season opener at home. The ice surface cleaned and ready to get marked up by our gals they faced off, puck dropped and we were off! During the first period we had many good chances to score but just couldn't seem to get the puck in that net, so the scoreboard remained at a dead lock of 0. With the second period set to start, we again started with a bang. Kincardine just couldn't seem to get the puck away from us and with a few minutes off the clock, Jaimie Badley fired a shot to the top corner of the net to score. Wow, what a shot! We were on the board and the aggressive played continued. Within a minute of our first goal, Arianna Catalan was skating quickly around their players in front of the net and would take a shot and score. Awesome play girls! Ava Gibbings would earn the assist from the great shot she took from the point. A few more minutes would pass with the play still be primarily in Kincardine's end to have Alexa Hahn just off to the side of the net to tap the puck neatly behind their goalie to increase our lead to 3. Another great point shot from Ava Gibbings to the stick of Emma French to setup the goal. Wow, our girls are on fire! This is awesome! As the period came to a close our own goalie Makayla Beuerman made some amazing saves to keep her shutout alive. At the end of the period the scoreboard showed 3-0 for the good gals. With a quick break and a breather before the start of the final period, our girls knew that they needed to continue their pace of hockey in order to seal the victory. Face off again at centre and we were off in this our final period of our season opener. This time with the play starting in our end, our girls just seemed a bit sluggish and maybe a bit over confident as they were leading. We couldn't seem to get it out of our end and with our goalie making a couple of saves they finally got it by her to score. Shoot, tough one girls, but let's get it back! As time counted down to the end of the game, Erica Pletsch would add to our lead with a beauty shot in front of the net from the play making of Jaimie Badley and Alexa Hahn. Yet again, some great team work from everyone on the ice. With the final seconds left on the clock - 11 seconds to be exact and another rush down to the Kinuck's goalie, Nicole Simmons was in the right place at the right time to score our final goal of the game, with Taya Cornish and Erica Pletsch earning the assists. The game was over and a happy bunch of girls on the ice winning 5-1. A great first game to start our season. Keep it up girls and let's go show these other teams a Meteors shower!
