Provincial Bound!
Submitted By Christine Beuerman on Mon 02 27, 17
The Tru Country Peewee Girls B team just swept St Marys in our play down series to go to the Provincial tournament the weekend of April 7th-9th.

Our first game of the Provincial play down was in Mitchell on Feb 11th. The girls came out victorious that day winning 3-0 and taking the first game of the series.

Our second game of this series was in St Marys on Feb 23rd.  As each team was set, the puck was dropped and game on.  We started this game slow and allowed St Marys a couple of break-aways but our goalie, Makayla Beuerman was ready for their challenge and kept that little black disk in front of her.  The remainder of the period was back and fourth with the score still sitting at zero at the end of the first period.  With the start of the second period, our gals had a bit more spark to their speed and puck movement which set Jaimie Badley up for a beauty shot to score.  Yes, we were finally on the board!  Just a few minutes later, Emma French would net one to increase our lead 2-0 but we continued to battle as St Marys was giving it all that they had.  With just seconds left on the clock in this period, St Marys riffled a shot top corner and just beat our goalie to cut into our lead.  Tough one, but what a good shot!  Now we were just leading by 1 with 12 minutes left in this barn burner.  After a quick breather and a pep talk from each bench, the teams took their spots to finish this game.  Play continued to go end to end with many good chances from both teams but each team’s goalie was there to shut the door.  As the end of the game was looming and St Marys was willing to try anything to get that tying goal, they pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but it back fired on them as Erica Pletsch noticed that empty net and scored.  Way to go girls!  The buzzer would sound and our high-flying Meteors had just won their second game of the series 3-1.  All we needed to do was win the next game in our series which was back on our turf to seal the deal and send us to the Provincial tournament.

Our feisty and fearless Meteors were ready for battle in the third game of this series this past Saturday Feb 25th back on our home turf.  With the tunes, ready as our gals stepped foot on the ice, the building was rocking with cheers from the crowd – GO Mitchell Go!  The clock was set, girls lined up and puck dropped to start this all-important game.  Right from the face off, Mitchell took control and moved the puck into St Marys end to have a scramble of players right in front of the St Marys netminder to have Emma French knock the puck into the back of the net just 15 seconds into the game.  Right on, way to start girls!  Brooklyn Gethke and Erica Pletsch would earn the assists from their help in the mad scramble. As the scoreboard showed 1-0 for the home team and the girls ready to start again, we ran into a problem with the scoreboard, it would continue to buzz despite the efforts of our scorekeeping duo to correct the issue, but after a few minutes, the board got reset and started working, yeah alright, game on! Our spunky group of gals pressed hard and have many good shots towards St Marys net but would be denied to keep the score 1-0 for us.  During the second period, St Marys seemed to have all the momentum as they dominated the play as we backed off but once again our goalie was there to make the saves she needed to keep the game in our favour.  Second period would come to an end with the go-getting Meteors leading 1-0.  With the final period upon us in this barn burner, it didn’t take long for the determination of Mitchell to show and the girls got right to work.  Just a couple of minutes into this period, Erica Pletsch would find the back of the net from help of line mate Brooklyn Gethke to give the girls the lead.  Awesome work girls, let’s keep this going.  As time continued to tick off the clock, you could see a change in St Marys as they just couldn’t seem to get this gritty Meteor team off their game and take charge of the game.  The puck battles continued in both ends but the hot stick of Emma French would score again from the play making of Ava Gibbings and Erica Pletsch, wow, you girls are on fire and nobody can stop you!  With an roar of excitement from the Mitchell crowd as we knew our girls had just sealed their fate to go to the Provincial tournament, Jaimie Badley skated the puck into the St Marys end to finish off the game with goal number 4.  Yes, that’s the way we do it!  As the final minute counted down, the girls just kept the puck away from the sticks of St Marys players and out of our end to win the game 4-0 and sweep St Marys in three games.  Wow, what a hot streak our Meteors are on.  Makayla Beuerman would earn another shutout.

Congratulations girls – your going to Provincials!

It has been an up and down season for our girls but all your hard work and determination has paid off as you now get to go compete with the best teams in Ontario for gold.

The girls now eagerly await their opponents in the Provincial tournament the beginning of April, in the mean time the girls will look forward too many practices, off ice training and exhibition games to make sure they are peek form for a chance to win a medal.

Good luck girls and go get them!
