Champions of the Paris Syl Apps Memorial U18 Tournament
Your E&F Masonry U18 LL Mitchell Meteors entered the Syl Apps Memorial U18 tournament over the weekend at the Brant Sports Complex and left as victorious champions. This years tournament hosted 12 amazing teams in total that were split into two pools of 6 teams. Your Meteors would beat the top team of each pool to take this championship.
The Meteors arrived at the Brant Center 6pm Friday 13th, 2025 to meet up with the Paris Wolf Pack 3 to start the tournament off. Porter Smith would get the call in net and record a well earned shut out to start the tournament for Mitchell. Game two would start at 11:30am on Saturday December 14th, 2025 against the Huntsville Otters. Aedan McCann would get the call in net for this game and play amazing for Mitchell. The Meteor's just couldn't hold the Otters off as they would go up 1 to 0 in the second period on a power play. Mitchell would lose this game 1 to 0 as the offense went dry.
Game three of the regulation round saw Mitchell matched up against the home team Paris Wolf Pack 2. The Meteors offense would go on fire as Carson Paulen, Cameron Schoonderwoerd, Grady Smith and Rogan Catalan (2) would lead Mitchell to a 5 to 2 victory. Porter Smith would get the call in net for this win over the Wolf Pack.
Due to the loss to Huntsville, Mitchell would place third in their Pool A behind, Hunstville and Walkerton. Pool B would be won by Six Nations 2, Paris Wolf Pack 1 and Waterford Wildcats respectively. Walkerton and Six Nations earning a bye by winning their pools in regulation.
Quarterfinals Game one would take place Sunday December 15th at 9:30am. Mitchell would face the Paris Wolf Pack 1. The offense would be electric for second straight game as Jack Crowley (2), Rogan Catalan, Darius Ladd, Griffin Bree and Adam Hunt would lead the team to a 6 to 1 win to move on to the semi-finals. Semi-Finals would see Mitchell take on the Pool A winning Walkerton Capitals in what would be an end to end battle. Porter Smith would get the call in net and would be electric and make many amazing stops. The first goal of the game would come from Mitchell on the power play as Rogan Catalan would pick up a bouncing puck all alone at the side of the net in the second period of play. At 8:43 of the third period Walkerton would final solve the Porter Smith puzzle and tie the game at 1 to 1. With time winding down and neither team seemingly able to score, Griffin Bree would pick up a puck in the neutral zone and as he crossed the blue line he would send a pass to Nolan Rolph who would unleash an absolute rocket that nobody saw but could hear hit both posts and rest just on the other side of the goal line. That shot would win the Meteors the game and move them on to the championship game.
The Championship game would take place at 3:30pm against Six Nations 2 Black Hawks who were undefeated until this game. Getting the call to goal would be Aedan McCann who would play a stellar game facing the hard shooting Black Hawks. With the game tied 4 to 4 and only 1:13 seconds left in the third period, Dominic Ladd would take a puck in from the Mitchell blue line and beat the Six Nations Goalie top corner which would be the winning goal. Mitchell would put up five(5) goals in all during the game, Dominic Ladd (2), Darius Ladd, Adam Hunt, Rogan Catalan to take the Championship.
It was an amazing effort from the entire team, the defense of Wyatt B., Darius Ladd, Lucas Bree, Tyler Sherbarth, Seth P., Grady Smith who battled every shift to help shut down the opponents offense when the team was not scoring. To the offense, that continued to contributed by playing their role from the centers of Griffin Bree, Max Hannon and Owen Beuermann. To the wingers, Rogan Catalan, Carson Paulen, Jack Crawley, Adam Hunt, Dominic Ladd, Jake Richardson, Nolan Rolph Cam Schoonderwoerd. Sorry I didn't get all the assists for the write up fellas, but that was a lot of action over the weekend!
Another big thank you to the Mitchell Coyotes for donating funds to help reduce the cost of the tournament for the Meteors to go out and win tournaments like this one.
