The Little Team That Could
The BMR Express U15C Meteor Girls took part in the Stratford Aces Tournament this weekend, entered in the B division since the C division was full.

It was meant to be a fun weekend of hockey with no lofty expectations, gaining experience competing against all B teams. They had quite an impressive run to the finals in some very close matchups throughout.

Game one vs Huron Heat

The victory was thought to be pretty much in the books as the Meteor girls had a 3-0 lead. The heat didn’t give up and applied pressure netting two goals to narrow the margin on the Meteors. Time ran out and the Meteors took their first win of the tournament 3-2. Goals in the game were recorded by defencemen Kinslee Horan (x2) and Elyn Hannon, with all three being shot from the point.

Game two vs. St. Marys Rock.

This game proved more difficult than the first game, as St.Marys holds 2nd place in their regular season division. Meteors were on the board first, from Danica Voros in the second period. The Rock responded by getting one to even things out. Tensions mounted as the minutes passed, resulting in an eventual 1-1 tie.

Game three vs Twin Centre Hericaines

Game three proved to be another tense affair, with the Hericaines netting the first one that bounced off a player and in the net. With heavy traffic in front of netminder Ally VanBakel, it was obvious she had no sight of it. The rest of the game was back and forth, with neither team recording another goal, resulting in a 1-0 loss.

Quarter finals vs. London Devilettes.

Yet another tight match. No scoring recorded in the first period, but the lead-off goal was from Phoebe Wood in the second period assisted by Elyn Hannon. Hannon recorded another assist in the third, this time on the goal by Voros. Having two goals on the board aided in playing  the game more defensively and with the seconds winding down and the London Goalie pulled, Leah Sills netted an empty netter, that wasn’t allowed, but we all know if sent for video review would have definitely counted. We’ll call it a 3-0 win.

Off to Semi-Finals Vs St. Marys

The Girls had some great momentum built heading into the Semi-Finals, and pressed hard. First goal of the game was from Reina Nevin, assisted by Martyna Hartwig. The third period was underway, and St. Marys had tied things up. The Meteors persisted and Ella Sills was rewarded with a goal on a nice tip from Horans lethal shot. Voros grabbed some more insurance to take the victory 3-1.

Finals vs Central Perth Predators

Adrenaline filled the rink on both sides, as each team was hungry for the gold medal.

Wood, opened the scoring in the first period, but the Predators responded to keep the game within reach and the fans on the edge. The remaining two periods were scoreless and we were headed into 3 on 3 overtime.  The fans didn't have to endure too much stress with Voros potted the game winner only 19 seconds into OT, ending the game 2-1. The Meteor players rushed to the Ice to celebrate and the fans cheered on as the little team that could…Did.

Great weekend of Hockey, with Coaches and parents proud of the team, proving that determination, positivity and excellent teamwork pays off.
