U-18 Girls Win Silver at Provincial Championships
The GC Financial U-18 Girls played some exciting hockey in Toronto over the weekend, bringing home the Silver Medal at the Provincial Championships.

Mitchell opened the tournament on Friday afternoon with a game against the West Oxford Inferno and set the tone early skating to a 6-2 win.   Josie Walker had the hot hand scoring the hat trick and adding an assist, while Brooklyn Boville followed with 2 goals and one assist and  Haileigh Templeman added a goal.   Brooklynn French and Jade Huygen each had a pair of assists while Andrea Kelly, Peyton VanderKuylen, Maggie McCarthy and Maddy Bernard each had singles.

Game 2 the Meteors faced off against the Kincardine Kinucks and this time it was Andrea Kelly lighting the lamp with a hat trick in a 3-1 win.  Assists went to Boville (3), McCarthy and Maddie Bernard.  This game featured some excellent goaltending as Kora Smith started the game not allowing a goal and then in the third while up 3-1, Shawni DeJong made a miraculous second effort save to take away an open net and preserve the 3-1 win.

In game 3 the Meteors met rival Wilmot Wolverines in an intense match.  Mitchell held their cool but also did not back down and skated away with a 5-0 win.  Kora Smith and Shawni DeJong, as they did all tournament shared the goaltending duties and were equally sharp, splitting the shutout.  This time it was Brooklyn Boville scoring the hat trick while Brooklynn French and Josie Walker added singles.  Assists went to Maddie Bernard (2), Jade Huygen, Casey Bernard and Andrea Kelly.  Jordyn Crawford, Kaylyn Klumper and Huygen were a force in the offensive zone with their forecheck, frustrating their opponents and opening up the ice for their teammates.

Mitchell placed 1st in their pool and faced the Gloucester Cumberland Stars in the Quarter Final, win or go home game which turned out to be arguably the most intense game of the tournament.  After falling behind 2-0 after the first period, the Meteors showed that they never give up.  Jade Huygen put Mitchell on the scoresheet at 11:15 of the second with assists going to Josie Walker and Casey Bernard.  Then with 6:17 left in the third period, Andrea Kelly took a pass from Brooklyn Boville to tie the game leading to a thrilling overtime period.  The two teams battled hard and with only 59 seconds left in the first overtime, Kelly finished off a nice passing play with Boville to end the game sending the girls to the semi final on Sunday

The semi final was another close game against the Timmins Falcons.  Scoreless going into the second,  Kora Smith made a nice breakaway save to hold on to the tie and then Haileigh Templeman fought off a defender in front of the net to bury what turned out to be the game winner in a 1-0 victory.  Assists went to Claire McCorkindale and Jade Huygen.

Playing for Gold, the girls faced a very tough opponent in The Markdale Shooting Stars.  The defense corps of Maggie McCarthy, Abby Gemmell,  Alexis Gettler, Peyton VanderKuylen, Maddie Bernard and Ally DeJong were pressed all game by the speedy opponents but were very solid in containing the Stars attack.  Mitchell gave everything they had but fell 2-0 to take home the silver medal.

This was a fantastic way to end a very impressive year for the U-18 Girls.  Congratulations to all of the girls as well as the coaching staff of Jordyn Elgie, Kevin Gettler, Sam Harefeld, Pam Schoonderwoerd and Jamie Klumper.
