Great Start to Provincial Playdowns
The Tru Country Peewee Girls had their first game in their provincial playdown series vs St Marys on Saturday and came out victorious.
The ice was clean and ready to be marked up by both teams but our Meteors wanted to prove to St Marys that they mean business and wanted the win to take the lead in the series. The puck was dropped and play started going from end to end but with all the intensity in the game a mis-count for the number of players on the ice for both teams would each earn them a too many player penalty within minutes of one another. Half way during the opening period, Jaimie Badley was in the right place at the right time to shoot and score! Right on girls, let's keep us this pace. Brett Gethke would earn the assist. The period would end with the good gals up by 1. Second period quickly started and was played very similar to the opening period, with lots of chances to score but each goalie doing their part to shut down the offense. A few more penalties were handed out during this period but the score remained the same 1-0 for us. The clock was set for the final period and play started again. Just minutes counted off the clock, Erica Pletsch would increase our lead to 2-0 from the play making of Emma French. The clock continued to count down, very slowly for all the Mitchell fans who were on the edge of their seats watching this determined group of girls give it everything they got! With just a couple of minutes left on the clock, St Marys decided to pull the goalie for the extra attacker and try to get on the scoreboard but Brooklyn Gethke took advantage of the open net to make it 3-0. This time Emma French and Ava Gibbings would get their names on the score sheet for their assistance. Makayla Beuerman was a rock for us during this game as she shut them down and got the shut out win 3-0. Way to go girls!
Our next playdown game will be next Thursday night (Feb 23) in St Marys.
Up coming this weekend, the girls are playing in the Walter Gretzky tournament in Brantford. They will be playing 3 round robin games - one on Friday and two on Saturday and hopefully in Semi Finals and Final on Sunday. Good luck girls!
