The Tru Country & Garden Novice Girls battled hard during the final game of the Girls Hockey Tournament this past weekend.
They were feeling good coming off two big wins on Friday and Saturday but would have to face the tough Wilmot Wolverines again in this Final game. Wilmot came out flying and kept the puck in the Mitchell end for most of the first period but some key saves from goaltender Grace Kipfer kept the game tied at zero. After a brief pep talk the Meteors game back out on the ice ready to go. End to end action ensued throughout the second, but Wilmot would be the first to get up on the scoreboard late in the second to end that period 1-0. The third period was a nail biter with lots of scoring opportunities at both ends but neither team were able to capitalize until 1:22 when Danielle Harmer would score assisted by Haileigh Templeman to tie the game on a scramble in front of the net. The Fans went wild and the energy in the arena was electric. Wilmot poured on the offence and again the girls were back and forth for 50 seconds until one of the Wolverines broke away and skated in alone. Kipfer was able to stop 2 of the 3 shots but the Wilmot player was able to squeeze the third attempt under her stick to score with only 28 seconds remaining in the period. The Mitchell coach called a 30 second time out to give the girls a quick chat and to pull the goalie for the extra attacker. With 6 on the ice the puck dropped and although the girls were able to shoot on the net 2 or 3 times they weren't able to bury the equalizer and the game would end Wilmot 2 Mitchell 1.
The Girls had a fantastic Tournament and played their hearts out all weekend! They should all be extremely proud of their accomplishment. I know the fans were on the edge of their seats and this is the kind of hockey we all LOVE to watch!
