The girls were pumped for the Annual Mitchell Girls
Tournament over the weekend.
The first matchup was a very close game against Central
Perth Predators. The Predators took a two goal lead in the first period. Elena
Hogger stretched her legs and went end to end, and was rewarded with the
Meteors first goal of the game. With Ally VanBakel pulled in the final minutes,
Pressure was applied, but not quite enough to tie up the game, ending in a 2-1
loss
Game two against St. Marys Rock, was another close matchup.
In the first period, Martyna Hartwig won the draw back to Kinslee Horan, who ripped
a shot past the Rock netminder to take the lead. St. Marys responded late in
the first and early in the second to take the lead. In the third period, the
Meteors second goal came in similar fashion as the first, with Hartwig winning
the draw back to Horan who ripped another shot in the net. Elena Hogger added the
game winner with the Meterors third goal, to win the game 3-2.
Game three against the Upper Maitland Mustangs gave the fans
their Moneys worth. The girls found themselves down by two, part way through
the second period. Phoebe Wood tipped a shot from Hoggar to narrow the Mustangs
lead to one. Then Hoggar popped one in early in the third period. With the
minutes winding down and the score tied, the Meteors needed a win to advance to
the Finals. VanBakel was pulled to add the extra attacker. With a scrum
happening behind the Mustangs net, Danica Voros managed to get a pass out to
Hartwig who made no mistake in potting the game winner. VanBakel Stood tall in
net making many great saves and the defence of Horan, Ella Sills, Hogger and
Casey Crowley played well taming the Mustangs.
The Girls faced the Predators once again in the
finals in front of a packed arena. It was a very intense game with the
Predators coming hard out of the gate. The game was scoreless until part way
through the second period when the Predators struck first. The Predators struck
again in the third, and with the minutes winding down VanBakel was pulled. The
Meteors tried their best, but a loose puck came out of the Predators zone into
the wrong hands and into the empty net earning the Predators scorer a hat
trick. VanBakel played a phenomenal game and stopped many difficult shots in
the 3-0 loss.
