U15 Girls Capture Championship in Mitchell Tournament
The Lockhart Funeral Home U15C Meteor Girls capped off a fantastic weekend at home by winning the championship at the annual Mitchell Girls Hockey Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Gloucester Cumberland Stars in the final.
The girls put forth an incredible effort defensively for the tournament, giving up only one goal in five games all weekend.  Goaltender Alissa Insley was outstanding with three shutouts, and sharing a fourth with Kora Smith.  Smith was creating heroics of her own as well at the other end of the ice, scoring two goals in the semi-final game to lead the team into the championship.

The locals opened the weekend on Friday morning in Mitchell against Lucan, whom they had shut out twice in pre-season play back in October.  The trend continued, as Brooklyn Boville had the hot stick, scoring all four goals in a 4-0 blanking of the Irish.  A great team effort was put forth helping Boville, as Rachel Haefling, Jade Huygen, Grave Laverty, Macie Russwurm, and Teagan Hickling all drew single assists in the victory.
In game two on Friday evening in Mitchell, the Meteors faced the Wallaceburg Lakers.  After a scoreless opening period, Huygen would connect in the final couple of minutes in the second, from Boville and Addy Wolfe.  Alexis Gettler would add an unassisted insurance goal in the final period to secure the win.
The Meteors would finish up pool play on Saturday evening in Monkton against the Gloucester Cumberland Stars in their first of two meetings for the weekend.  Smith started the game between the pipes for the locals, with Insley taking over for the second half to share the 3-0 shutout win.  Boville continued her torrid pace with another pail of markers, with a single added by Laverty.  Brooklynn French, Josie Walker, Hickling and Wolfe would all pick up assists.
Securing the top seed after round robin pool play, the Meteors eliminated familiar league foe Stratford Aces in the semi final early Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout win.  Smith opened the scoring three minutes in with her first of two, set up by Walker.  Beginning a string of three unanswered second period goals, Boville would knock in a rebound from a Huygen shot to take a 2-0 lead.  Walker would add her own goal moments later tipping in Gettler's point shot, and Smith would tally the final insurance goal late in the second assisted by Walker to send the team to the championship game rematch with Gloucester Cumberland.
In the final game, the Meteors quickly moved out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as Walker and Huygen would both record a goal and an assist.  The Stars would score early in the final period to cut the deficit to one goal and spoil a fifth consecutive shutout, but the strong defense and goaltending stood tall to preserve the win and championship.
