U11 Ace Garden Centre Meteor Girls Capture Hometown Tournament Championship
The Meteor girls took the win in the first of two games on Friday, defeating Upper Maitland Mustangs 4-0.

Danica Voros initiated the scoring late in the first period assisted by Emma Upshall. Martyna Hartwig was able to mark the second goal late in the second period as she popped one in short side. In the third period, Kinslee Horan wove up the ice and took a nice shot on net, with Hartwig grabbing the rebound. Voros grabbed the final goal of the game by sneaking it through the 5-hole. Ella Sills long reach proved helpful several times throughout which helped Ally VanBakel record the shutout on the win.

Game 2 proved to be a bit tougher for the girls as they took a hard fought 3-1 loss to Kincardine Kinucks. The Kinucks got on the board first on shorthanded opportunity, and grabbed another in the second period from a goalmouth scramble. The Meteors did not give up and Leah Sills got on the board early in the third period, assisted by Hartwig and Horan. Some great passing efforts to the net by Amelia Wolfkamp and Sophia VanNes, but the Meteors were unable to capitalize. With plenty of time on the clock the team continued to work hard but ran out of time as The Kinucks snuck another in with only a few minutes remaining.

The Meteors needed a win against the Stratford Aces in game three to have a good chance to reach the finals. After a scoreless first period, and half the second it was looking like the game would be close, but Voros grabbed a shorthanded goal to break the slump. Another goal followed shortly after by Emma Upshall, assisted by Voros and Charlee Weesjes.  Most of the third period was spent scoreless, but Hartwig and Callie VanLoon worked hard to dig out a puck to Leah Sills who sealed the game with the third and final goal. Ally VanBakel recorded the 3-0 shutout thanks in part to the strong forechecking of Caley Michels and solid linework of Casey Crowley.

The team was excited and championship game ready, wearing their Uniac Insurance Meteor T-shirts in team spirit. The girls had a score to settle with the gritty Kinucks, from the loss they suffered in Friday’s action. Lots of Back and forth action throughout the first period with no score being recorded, proving this would be a difficult game to win for either side. The Meteors’ Dani Vosper recorded the first goal early in the second with a beauty shot to beat the Kinucks net minder, assisted by Horan. The goal gave the girls a lift as Voros grabbed another assisted by Vosper to take the 2-0 lead in the game. Ally VanBakel claimed the third shutout of the tournament, only allowing three goals across four games. The Meteors represented their hometown extremely well. Their strong team effort earned the girls the championship title. Many thanks to Coaches Randy, Brooklyn, Dani, and Cori, for setting a great example for the girls.
