Playoffs Hockey Begins!
The McLaughlin Auto Wholesale U13 AE Meteors have played 2 games in the round robin of their WOAA playoffs.
Game 1 went last Wednesday (Feb. 9) and took the Meteors to the Paisley Arena to face off against one of the top ranked teams in our division, the AEMHA Ice Dogs. This was a fast paced game from start to finish, and the Meteors did their best to stay with the Ice Dogs, never giving up on any play but in the end fell 4 - 0. Carter Harris had a great game making several key saves throughout to keep things close including 2 break away attempts.
With our first home game in weeks the Meteors welcomed the Listowel Cyclones on Friday (Feb. 11). The mighty Mitchell arena stands were packed (well half packed...) and the boys were excited to put on a show!
Listowel came out aggressively and took an early 1 - 0 lead in the first 1:12 of the game. Mitchell would answer with 2 minutes to go in the first when Wesley Berendsen found the back of the net (unassisted). The Cyclones would keep up the pressure in the second period scoring 2 straight and taking a 3 - 1 lead. The Meteors kept chipping away and netted their 2nd of the game when Tyler Burtenshaw scored with a helper from Reegan Vessie. Listowel kept their lead of 3 - 2 for 8.5 tense minutes in the third period until a costly Cyclones penalty enabled Berendsen(goal) and Burtenshaw(assist) to team up and tie the game! Three minutes later with a face off in the Cyclones end Berendsen won the draw and muscled the puck back to defenseman Colby Faust who ripped a blistering wrist shot 'Plinko' style through the other players for the game winning goal! Burtenshaw would add the insurance goal with an empty netter. Great home win for the Meteors!
Mitchell plays their another Friday night home game tomorrow night at 7:50pm against the TCDMHA Rebels, hope to see you all their! Good luck Meteors!
