Hello hockey fans!
The arrival of Covid has certainly affected many things without discrimination, hockey being one of them. Covid has presented many challenges, and to complain about its effect on the hockey season while peoples life’s are being changed forever, businesses destroyed and stress levels tested, is asinine. Let’s all be happy we have a season and enjoy it because we can.

The virus has however definitely affected the boys hockey season. Play as we used to know it, is no longer. Masks, social distancing, limited parent representation, and no booth are only but some of the restrictions that have been placed on the gallery. Due these restrictions, I have only been to two of the three games the U18 Tier 1 boys have played.

For the players, 4 on 4 hockey, no face offs, no body contact, only penalty shots and limited amount of players per team has made the game, dare I say it, non-eventful. The financial losses incurred to the arena and MMH will have repercussions for years.
Realizing only half the parents and none of grandparents could watch their favorite player, a plan was needed to rectify this. Jeff Lockhart quickly developed a plan and the first livestream broadcast of the U18 Tier 1 boys was introduced to the Instagram world. You can watch the boys play live on Instagram by logging in to @mitchell_meteors_midgets.

The first game was in Clinton last Friday night. No longer are there three periods, but two 22 minute non-stop periods. Now these two teams have some history, but Covid prevented this history from appearing. The Mitchell team out played the BCH Ice dogs and at the end of 44 minutes of continuous play with numerous penalty shots, the boys had won their away season opener 8-3.

The U18 Tier 1 boys travelled next to Listowel on Sunday evening. Beating the Cyclones  just once last year, the tension and anticipation of the this game was deafening in the Steve Kerr Arena. Playing in front of an almost empty arena, the Mitchell boys dominated the Cyclones (03-04 group) and left Listowel with their second win 13-5 of the season.

The home opener for Mitchell’s U18 Tier #1 boys was on Wednesday evening against the Cyclones (04-05 group).   Our boys handed them a 6-2 loss, winning their home opener and propelling them to first place with three wins.

Although very different, it is still an absolute privilege to watch this boys entertain us for 44 minutes.  The Mitchell U18 Tier 1 boys host the BCH Ice Dogs on Wednesday, December 2nd @ 8 pm. If you wish to watch it live, log into Instagram and enjoy the excellent camera work by Jeff Lockhart.  If you are not sure how to log in to Instagram, ask any teenager for help ;)
