Great Mitchell Tournament

What a weekend for our Midget girl’s team!  The final game in the Mitchell Tournament was an edge of the seat thriller for all that were there to watch.

The girls kicked off the tournament on the Friday night against a strong physical team from South Huron. First period would end like it started with a 0-0 deadlock despite numerous of chances South Huron had on our goalie Maggie Phillips but she stood tall to keep them off the scoreboard.  During the second period both teams were able to capitalize and get on the board with South Huron opening the scoring and then Nicole Hahn would net our first one of the tournament with Mihret Eliasziw earning the assist to tie the game, South Huron continued to control the battles and would score once more to take the lead 2-1 going into the final period.  As play continued during the 3rd period and the penalty box continuing to have an open door for players, the aggressive play making of Tayler McCann would tap that little black disk behind the South Huron goalie to tie the game at 2. Just minutes later, South Huron was able to sneak the puck pass our goalie to take the lead and the win 3-2.  Tough game girls!

On Saturday our feisty group of Meteors would play 2 games against Lambton and a familiar foe – Ilderton.  Just like the previous night, the Lambton team proved to be a tough aggressive team and scored the first goal of the game with just seconds left in the opening period.  They held the slim lead 1-0 after the second period as well as we had some great chances but just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net.  The third period started and we noticed a bit of a fire in our girls as they seemed to start to control the play more and be more aggressive with those Attack girls.  Our goalie Makayla Beuerman was on her game as she shut down all Attack attempts to keep them off the scoreboard and Mihret Eliasziw took things under control to score not 1 but 2 goals in this final period to give us the lead and the point shot from Jessica Rae near the end of this period would seal the win 3-1. Emily Dearing and Alexa Hahn would grab the assists.  With this win, it put the girls in good standings with our last round robin game that night against Ilderton.  The top two teams in the four team pool would move on to play in the Final on Sunday.

Saturday night’s game was a total domination of Meteors hockey over Ilderton with us skating away with an 8-0 victory.  Maggie Phillips would earn the shut out.  Tayler McCann showed everyone how “hot” her stick was as she netted not 1 goal that night but 5 – yes 5 goals! Chloe Bannon and Mihret Eliasziw also got in on scoring action to seal our date in the final against South Huron. Sammy Cameron, Emily Dearing, Jessica Rae and Nicole Hahn were all key assist earners in the scoring landslide.

Everyone would need a good night’s rest to get ready for the Battle Royale for title of Mitchell Girls Tournament Midget C.   The time was here for the battle to begin! Since we had just played these girls the other night, our gals knew that South Huron was not going to back down and neither could we so right from the faceoff, the pace was quick and the aggressive play started with both teams going end to end and each goalie not waiting to surrender the first all important goal.  First and second periods would settle nothing as the scoreboard remained at zero.  Makayla Beuerman was in net for us and what a game she was having as time after time she turned those Sabers away.  With the third period left to play – 15 minutes to hopefully decide the fate of this game, we continued to take shots and finally at 9:27 mark, Tayler McCann scored from the play making of Emma Badley. Great goal! With the faceoff back at centre ice and a determined Sabers team they took the puck and moved it down to our end to set up a screen in front of our goalie and caused a bit of goalie inference to allow them to tap the puck in our net to tie up the game.  This game continued to go end to end but the buzzer would finally sound to end the period just as we started tied once again and the five minute over time loomed.   Both team had some great chances to end this sudden death time period but once again, South Huron set up their screen out front of our goalie and with the havoc of players around the net, they scored to end the game.  Final score was 2-1 for them but it could have gone either way.

What a great showing from our girls all weekend long, you proved even though we might be a small team we are the Mighty Meteors!

The girls get back to action this weekend with an exhibition game in Sarnia on Saturday and two league games – one on Sunday in Mitchell vs. Lambton and the other on Monday night in Monkton vs. South Huron.
