PeeWee LL brings home GOLD
The boys travelled to Niagara region for the Wainfleet Wild tournament Friday, Jan. 31 to play the host team Wainfleet Wild #1.  Wainfleet proved to be a fast-skating, strong, back-checking team.  We had our hands full.  Wainfleet scored first and held the score at 1-0 until the third.  Goalie Aedan McCann stood on his head with shoots coming from all angles.  Wainfleet put two more in before the end of the third.  Then on a powerplay Bradley Dearing took the shut-out away from the Wild ending the game with 3-1 loss.

Next up was Oakville Rangers.  The boys came out ready to win and were up 7-0 after the first.  Unfortunately, with a points per period tournament the boys had to keep the foot on the gas.  Final score was 13-0.  This put the boys in third place after round-robin play.

Quarter-final game would have us seeded against the struggling Oakville Rangers again.  This is the game that brought parents from both teams to tears.  Never been to a game where one goal in the final seconds brought cheers from every spectator in the arena.  Some top-notch sportsmanship from our boys and in the words of complete strangers “class-act”.  Final score 9-1 with Callum Harris sneaking in the hat trick. Meteors are advancing to the semi-finals.

Semi-finals have us facing the big & strong Tillsonburg Lightning, the Meteors were ready to battle.  Tyler Scherbarth would get things started quickly in the first on a pass across from Brody Schoonderwoerd.  Tillsonburg answered back in the 2nd to tie it up.  Starting the third 1-1 it was time to crank it up.  Scherbarth again gets one to the back of the net and minutes later Lincoln Lorentz on a crazy angle would put another one in.  3-1 win, the Meteors are now going for gold.  Looks like we’re spending Super Bowl at the Wainfleet arena.

The Gold medal game would have us meeting up with Wainfleet Wild again.  This time we were ready to skate and keep the puck in our control.  Matty Menheere would get away early in the first to start the scoring.  Entering the 2nd 1-0 ahead, both teams were skating hard and both goalies were standing on their heads.  Wainfleet scored early in the second to tie us up.  Menheere was able to get us ahead again to start the third in the lead 2-1.  The boys were running out of steam as this was game 3 of the day for them.  But they fought hard until the final buzzer to bring home GOLD with a final score of 2-1.

This team showed their true colours this week-end, that they can play hard but with compassion too.  Our hard-working forwards, Griffin Bree, Scherbarth, Rogan Catalan, Schoonderwoerd, Zack Siemon-Hergott, Harris and Lorentz didn’t stop skating and were first to the puck all weekend.  The defence of Dearing, Menheere, Jackson Kaufman and Ryan Glauser were a wall that was hard to penetrate and if you weren’t quick to get to them they will score on you.  Goalie Aedan McCann stood tall and was a true hero this week-end!  The Gold medal was nice but this team’s sportsmanship is what made your parents proud this week-end.  You represented the Mitchell Meteors well!
