Meteors and Sabres play to a tie!
Thompsons Mitchell Atom AE Meteors played an exhibition game on Sunday evening (Dec 8) against the South Huron Sabres in the pleasant village of Monkton, Ontario.

With a 5:30pm puck drop the Meteors and Sabres got started in a much anticipated 'what could have been' game had they made the finals of their Silver Stick tournament a couple of weekends prior.

The Meteors used much of the first period scrambling to settle in and play their brand of hockey. The first period would end scoreless with the Sabres controlling most of the play, Sebastian Voros made several key saves in his split game with Bryson Eickmeyer. The Second period would also end in a 0 - 0 tie, but this time the Meteors started to apply pressure and the d-line did a great job controlling rebounds and shutting down any rushes the Sabres tried. The score sheet finally saw action in the third period with the Sabres getting on the board first at the 5:32 mark. Mitchell didn't long to get in on it, when Reegan Vessie picked up the puck on a turn-over in the neutral zone and just slid the puck past the goalie between pad and post. Less than a minute later the Sabres would take a 2 - 1 lead when a bouncing puck would land on one of their sticks giving Eickmeyer no chance. Now for the real excitement! With under 2 minutes remaining in the game and the Meteors skating short-handed, Caleb Pennings raced for a loose puck in the neutral zone. Having narrowly beat the South Huron skater he readied his shot only to be taken down from behind and was awarded a penalty shot! Calm, cool and collected Pennings skating in a wide arch towards the goal and when the goalie made the first move Caleb was ready holding the puck long enough and put it in with a back hand, to tie the game! Mitchell was able to kill the remainder of the penalty and the game ended in a 2 - 2 tie. Great work Meteors! Good luck this week in a busy schedule with Listowel, BCH and Kincardine.
