Meteors regain scoring touch over the weekend
The Lockhart Funeral Home Peewee C girls went 2-0-1 over the weekend to move themselves up in the division standings

On Thursday night, the Meteors hosted the St. Mary's Rock and skated to a 1-1 tie.  Ashley McLeod scored the lone goal for Mitchell nearing the end of the 1st with a wrist shot from the circle.  Shawni Dejong was stellar in goal for the Meteors holding off St. Mary's with many great saves, but with 5 minutes left in the third, the opposition scored to tie it up.
On Saturday the girls traveled to St. Thomas to face the Panthers, a team Mitchell is chasing in the standings.  The girls came out strong scoring twice in the final minutes of the first.  Jade Huygen powered the puck in deep and got it to McLeod who made a great pass in front to Kaylee Seip who buried the one timer. Kara Rolph battled hard along the boards and got the puck free to McLeod who went in alone giving Mitchell a 2-0 lead after one period.  The Panthers  responded at the beginning of the 2nd but soon after McLeod blocked a shot in her own end and took it down on a breakaway and made no mistake to regain the 2 goal lead.  St. Thomas pressed hard but strong goaltending from Ally Vogels as well as excellent defense held them off as they were able to get one near the end of the third but could not complete the comeback giving the Meteors a 3-2 victory.
On Sunday the girls traveled to St. Mary's for a rematch against the Rock and this time would not be denied the victory.  The game remained scoreless after 2 periods but Mitchell came out flying in the third.  McLeod opened the scoring 3 minutes in  when she picked up a loose puck to go in alone and score to open the floodgates.  Just 20 seconds later the girls battled hard in the offensive zone leading to Jade Huygen scoring on a great shot with an assist going to McLeod.  Shortly after Peyton Vanderkuylen made a pass forward to Rachel Haefling who powered down the boards firing a shot on goal with Rolph on the doorstep to jam it past the goaltender.  Brooklynn French finished the scoring with 22 seconds left on a nice pass from Huygen also assisted by Haefling.
Shawni DeJong earned the shutout and the defense of Jessie Horan, Sadie Josling, Vanderkuylen and Elli Morrison were stellar constantly pushing the puck and shutting down the opposition.
Next for the girls is the Orangeville Sweetheart Tournament on Jan. 25-26.
