Lockhart Peewee C girls start off 2019 on a high note
The Lockhart Funeral Home Peewee C girls started off the new year with a win and a tie over the weekend on 2 very strong efforts with nail biting results

On Saturday evening the Meteors traveled to Watford to take on the Lambton Attack and gave the hosts all they could handle.  Backed by some stellar saves by goaltender Ally Vogels, the girls pressed all game and showed that the new year was a blank slate and that they had something to prove.  The game remained scoreless until near the end of the 2nd when Lambton scored on a scramble to go up 1-0.  Mitchell would not go away and Vogels held them in setting up a dramatic finish.  With the goalie pulled for the extra attacker the Meteors pressed hard which forced the Attack to ice the puck with 7 seconds left in the game.  On the ensuing face off Kara Rolph won the draw to Ashley McLeod who fired a shot and a net crashing Jade Huygen  took 2 whacks at it to bury the rebound and earn the tie with 3.9 seconds left.
On Sunday the Meteors hosted St. Thomas which turned out to be another great game.  Being outnumbered by almost 2-1 in bench depth the girls used grit and hard work to send the opponents home on the losing end of a 1-0 score.  Led by excellent defensive play by Jessie Horan, Sadie Josling, Elli Morrison and Peyton Vanderkuylen as well as tremendous and timely saves by goaltender Shawni DeJong, the girls turned St. Thomas back on almost every chance they got.  With just over a minute left in the second Kara Rolph fired a shot off an offensive face off and Ashley McLeod pounced on the rebound to go up 1-0.  With only 2 minutes left in the 3rd, Rachel Haefling outraced an opponent down the ice forcing a turnover.  Brooklynn French, following up the play got the puck in front to Rolph who made no mistake to bury it and go up 2-0.  What looked like the final dagger was anything but.  Only 8 seconds after the Mitchell goal,  St Thomas scored to bring the opposition to withing one.  With the extra attacker on the ice against us, our girls held down the fort including 2 stellar saves in close by DeJong with less than a minute left to preserve the win.
Overall a great weekend of hockey with more great games to come.
