Solid showing at Exeter Pink on the Rink Tourney
The Lockhart Peewee C girls played in the Exeter Pink on the Rink tournament on the weekend losing in the semi finals in a very close, hard fought game.

Friday found the Meteors playing against North Middlesex to open the tournament and came out on the short end of a 4-2 score.  Mitchell started off a little sluggish but goaltender Ally Vogels held down the fort giving our girls a chance to get their legs going.  After a few unfortunate bounces the opponents took the lead with 2:40 left to play in the first.  Nearing the end of the second our girls thought they had tied the game but a quick whistle negated a goal.  This could have could of discouraged the girls but seemed to fire them up as on the very next shift, Ashley McLeod intercepted a pass at the opponents blue line and went in all alone to tie the game up.  Midway through the 3rd, Kara Rolph picked up the puck in her own end and outskated defenders to go in all alone and roofed the puck to take the lead.  The girls held on with Vogels making a huge point blank save to keep the lead until 4:04 left in the game when a hard North Middlesex shot from in close finally tied the game.  Again bad bounces did us in as North Middlesex scored twice including one deflecting off a skate.  The defence pairing of Peyton Vanderkuylen and Elli Morrison played extremely well using their passing and skating abilities to constantly get the puck down the ice and put the opponents on their heels. Jessie Horan was a threat on numerous occasions with her rushes while her defense partner Sadie Josling played solid in front of the net clearing the puck on many chances.

On Saturday for their second game the girls played Lucan and looked like they were on a mission after losing the opener.  Nearing the end of the 1st period the girls pressed hard and were relentless on the fore check resulting in Rachel Haefling banging in the puck from in close with assists going to Vogels and Rolph.  In the second period the girls did not let up, scoring 3 times to take a commanding lead.  Kaylee Seip scored twice in 20 seconds with hard shots converting on great assists from Rolph, Vogels and Jade Huygen.  Rolph finished the second period scoring with a shorthanded goal after a nice breakout pass from Josling which set her loose on a breakaway.
The defense again was a huge strength with some great rushes and passing, continuously turning the play up ice.  Horan was a constant threat and snuck in from the point to bury a rebound and scored her second of the game from the point to finish the scoring with Huygen assisting on both goals and Seip adding one.  Shawni DeJong stood on her head and made some amazing saves when called upon earning her the well deserved shutout.

In the 3rd game the Meteors faced Lambton who we had lost to twice in the Stratford tournament although both were 1 goal games.  The game had all the makings of a barn-burner and indeed it was.  Vogels was strong in net and the defence of Morrison, Vanderkuylen, Josling and Horan were stellar as they turned back the opposition attack.  Lambton finally took the lead at 4:46 of the second but the girls did not give up.  The forwards fought fatigue and pressured the Lambton defence until it finally paid off.  With just over 6 minutes left in the 3rd Rolph pushed the puck up the boards and then got it out to Haefling who fired a hard shot which just missed but a net crashing DeJong buried the rebound to tie the game and eventually send it to a shootout.  In the shootout Vogels was solid stopping all shooters and Huygen totally undressed the goalie with a deke and top shelf shot to win the game.

Mitchell again played North Middlesex in Sunday's semi final hoping to avenge their earlier loss to them.  The Meteors came out strong creating many scoring chances and DeJong made some outstanding saves to keep the game tied until 2:39 of the second when the opponents finally broke through and scored twice before the end of the period. The girls did not quit and came out flying in the 3rd.  Kara Rolph broke loose in our end and chipped the puck past the defender to go in alone and turned the goaltender inside out to get the Meteors to within 1.  After going down 3-1 the girls still did not give up.  Huygen scored by jamming in a shot with some well deserved assists going to Brooklynn French and Seip for their hard fore checking.  The girls pressed hard but could not find the equalizer before time expired.

After watching the girls this weekend we can only see good things to come as they continually show great improvement in passing, skating and hockey smarts.  Great job girls and coaches.
