WOAA Action Continues
On March 5th the Thompsons Ltd Mitchell Atom AE team traveled to Belmore to take on the Wingham Ironmen in what was a do or die game for the locals. Wingham was sitting on top of the WOAA Group A standings with 4 wins (8 points), while Mitchell was close behind with 2 wins and 2 ties (6 points). With only two games remaining, both between these two teams, Mitchell needed to win to have a chance. With a strong team effort and good defensive play, Mitchell would come away with the 4-1 win!

The old Belmore Barn was cold but that didn't stop Mitchell from being on fire in the first period. Most of the action was in Winghams end with a lot of great pressure and defensive play keeping the puck deep. The few times Sebastian Voros was tested in our net, he stood tall and was able to keep Wingham off the score board. Mid way through the first, Mitchells Hudson Porter was able to get some open ice and with a bit of room he made no mistake blasting one by Winghams goalie making it 1-0.
The second period was similar to the first with Mitchells defense working very well together. Wingham was not giving up and took to crashing the net in an attempt to rattle our goalie. With a quick breather, Voros was ready to go. Another  scramble play in front of Mitchells net would see Wingham players and fans raise their hands in celebration, only to be disappointed to see the referee waive it off as the puck did not actually cross the line! The very next puck drop, Landon VanBakel would break free and skate end to end, deking out Winghams goalie to put Mitchell up 2-0!
Early in the third period, Wingham would fire one towards Mitchells net and after bouncing off a few shin pads it ended up past Voros making the score 2-1. Mitchell didn't give up and again, the very next shift, Owen Beuermann put one in on a nice passing play, assisted by VanBakel and Brown. The game was intense as Wingham was not used to losing lately. With some good battles going on, Mitchell ended up in the penalty box with 3 mins left in the game. Wingham then pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, making it 6 on 4. However, Hudson Porter was able to fire the puck from end to end finding the back of the net for the extra insurance goal, giving Mitchell the 4-1 victory.

These two teams face off again on Friday night at 6:50pm in Mitchell, with the winner moving on to play in a WOAA final series.
