Four Closely Matched Games for Novice Girls In Stratford Tournament

The first game was against the Stratford hosts in their closest game against them so far this season. Stratford opened the scoring halfway through the first period.  Kayla Visneskie opened the scoring for the Meteors 20 seconds into the second period on a breakaway with passes from Charlee Weesjes and Avery Smith.  Ellie MacArthur would add 2 more goals for the Novices with assists going to Visneskie, Alise Crawford and Amelia Wolfkamp. Martyna Hartwig recorded the 3-1 win in net.

Mitchell faced Ilderton for the second game where MacArthur opened the scoring with a nice breakaway goal. Early into the second frame Danica Voros earned the second goal from the perfect spot by the hashmarks. Ilderton responded shortly after to narrow the Meteors lead. MacArthur persisted as she fought off both Ilderton defenders and broke free to grab a well deserved breakaway goal.  That wouldn't be the end of the scoring for MacArthur, who grabbed 2 more goals in the third period assisted by Smith and Phoebe Wood. Ilderton also had 2 goals in the third but was not enough to take the lead away from the Novice Meteor Girls. Selina Gethke would earn the win in net

Game 3 against Wilmot was a very close game with many chances on both ends, Gethke did her best in net to keep the game even, but 2 minutes into the third period, Wilmot grabbed a goal to take the lead 1-0.  The Novice girls didn't give up, but fell short on time and took their first loss of the tournament.

Game 4 was a great back and forth game to watch against Woodstock.  The Girls needed a win in this game to advance to the finals.  Woodstock opened the scoring in the final minutes of the first period.  The two teams battled hard in the second but neither team was able to record a goal.  Woodstock opened the third period with a goal to put the Meteors down by 2.  It was now or never for the Meteors, and they responded with two more goals. The first from Smith assisted by Wolfkamp, and the second unassisted from Alise Crawford.  Smith had a rush in the dying seconds of the third, in what was a very promising chance for the game winner highlight reel, but time ran out before the final shot could be fired, ending the game in a 2-2 tie. Gethke once again kept the girls in reach of the win, with solid goaltending.
