"A Champs" in Drayton
The Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL 1 team traveled to Drayton on Saturday for 3 hockey games in the Tyler Lopers Memorial tournament. Strong offensive and defensive efforts, paired with great goaltending was just what they needed to win the "A" championship.
Game #1 had the Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL1 team paired against Twin Centres. Tyler Burtenshaw opened the scoring, assisted by Michael Coyne and Sam McCarthy. Tyler Verberne passed the puck to Emmett Rolph, who made some nice moves past the opposing players and put a backhand shot past the goalie for goal #2. Weston Bannon, assisted by Verberne, scored goal #3. The second period scoring was led by Greg McKay, assisted by Coyne and McCarthy after a scramble in front of the net. Burtenshaw went in alone and scored to make it 5-0. Mason Hoegy got the last 2 goals with some fancy stick handling. Goal #6 was assisted by Burtenshaw and Bannon. The seventh and final goal was unassisted. Carter Harris played a great game in net, earning himself a shutout.
Game #2 was a match up between the Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL1 team and Oakville. Burtenshaw, with an assist from Deni Beaudin, scored the lone goal in the first period. Lots of back and forth action and scoring chances for both teams in the second period, the Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL1 team started the scoring late in the period when Coyne scored, assisted by McCarthy. McCarthy earned himself another point when he scored the third goal, assisted by Rolph. Coyne snuck another quick one past the goalie with less than 1 minute left in the period making it 4-0. Assists to McCarthy & McKay. Oakville scored in the third period for a final score of 4-1 for Mitchell. Carter Harris's quick moves between the posts kept Oakville at 1 goal and a spot in the "A" championship game.
Game #3 for the "A" championship was between the Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL1 team and Beverly. Hoegy started the scoring when Verberne passed it to him in front of the net and he snuck the puck past the goalie. Hayden DeJong earned himself a couple points when he scored the second and third goals. Assists went to Bannon and Verberne, and Burtenshaw. Verberne carried in the puck and scored to end the second period at 4-0. The third period scoring was an unassisted goal from Rolph, followed by an unassisted goal from Hoegy. Another shutout for Carter Harris and only 1 goal scored against him in the tournament, and the Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL1 team were undefeated in this tournament to be the "A" champs.
The Dodge Caravan Kids Novice LL1 team will play Seaforth on Sunday in the final regular season game.
