Festival Cup Challenge
The Atom Girls B squad took to the ice in the Stratford Aces Festival Cup Challenge tournament this past weekend.

In game one of the tournament, the locals burst out of the gate and took the North York Storm by a score of 4-0.

Danielle Harmer tucked in the Meteors’ first in a solo effort, with Kara Rolph popping in the second goal off a pass by Jade Huygen.  Brooklyn Boville and Heather Ogilvie scored the next two unassisted.

The Meteors also won their second game by way of a Kora Smith shutout, 3-0 over the Walkerton Capitals.
Strong defensive play by Alexis Gettler, Jessie Horan, Heather Ogilvie and Aubrey Vosper also helped in earning the consecutive shutouts.

Josie Walker and Josephine Jarmuth assisted on Ashley Macleod’s first to open the scoring.  Huygen sent Jarmuth in alone for the insurance marker, and Boville sealed the win with Walker adding her second assist of the game.

Saturday morning, the Meteors lost to the Ancaster Avalanche in a 4-1 game whose score belied how close the matchup actually was.  Jarmuth rang up the lone Mitchell tally off the sticks of Huygen and Walker,  whose dual effort along the boards sprung Jarmuth free.

The little ladies then encountered what has slowly become a growing concern;  the Lakeshore Lightning.  As in recent league battles, the Lightning mistreated the Meteors, sending them to a 4-0 defeat.  Despite this setback, the girls placed 4th overall, which positioned them to play the top team in the semi-finals.  Much to Jarmuth’s chagrin, it was the Lightening who finished first after sporting a 4-0 record with 15 goals for and only 1 goal against in the round robin.

The semi-final match-up had the Meteors down to the Lightning by 3 goals midway through the game. Refusing to go softly into that good night, the Meteors mounted a valiant comeback effort, beginning with an unassisted goal by Rolph.  Huygen assisted Jarmuth in a goal mouth scramble in the waning moments with Smith pulled in favour of the extra attacker.   Unfortunately, they could not repeat their efforts and found themselves on the negative side of a 3-2 thriller, and a tournament exit.
