Great Games at Pink on The Rink Tournament
The Tru Country Peewee Girls B played some great hockey over the weekend during Pink on The Rink with 2 ties in round robin play and a big win in the Semi Finals to go to the Finals!

There were only 3 teams in our division so we would play one game on Friday and our other round robin game on Saturday with the first-place team getting a bye into the final and the other two teams left to battle it out in the Semi Final Saturday night.

Late Friday morning was the opening of our of tournament with us taking on Mt Brydges.  A team we faced in our last tournament so we knew what to expect.  It would take us most of the first period to get on the board first but Arianna Catalan would net the goal from Emma French’s pass.  Way to go girls!  Within a minute, Mt Brydges answered right back to tie up the score.  First period of play was over and got ready to go again.  Right from the faceoff to start the second period, a dominant Meteor team got right to work with quick skating and play making to have Emma French score with help from line mate Arianna Catalan.  Way to start the period, let’s continue this pressure.   As time continued to count down off the clock the second was over with us having the slim lead 2-1.  The players were set and the puck dropped to start this final period.  Play was back and forth with each team having chances but being denied by both goalies.  Time was ticking off the clock and with the final minute upon us and us still holding the slimiest of leads, Mt Brydges pulled their goalie for the extra attacker.  What a furry of skaters on the ice and a pile of players in front of our goalie to screen her, they shot and scored to tie the game.  Ugh, tough one girls!  We faced off once again but the puck was passed back and fourth to have the game end in a tie 2-2.  Good team effort girls!

We would get a good deserved rest as we got the remaining part of the day off to get ready for our next battle against the top team in our league division TCDMA Rebels on Saturday afternoon.

We traveled through the snow to Stephan Township to take on the TCDMA Rebels.  We knew this was going to be another good game as we tied them the last time we played.  As both teams got on the ice, we knew our girls were pumped and ready to play!  Puck was dropped and off we went.  Great start to the game, our gals were aggressive with the puck and taking shots.  This period would end with the score still 0-0.  Second period we started the same with good puck control and a fire under our butts as we wanted that first goal of the game.  Half way thru the period with some great chances in front of their net, Nicole Simmons found the puck on her stick and stuffed it behind their goalie.  Alright, nice work girls!  Arianna Catalan would earn the assist. The period would end with us up by just a goal.  The final period was open us and those Rebels came out flying!  We struggled for the first few minutes but soon found our legs again and picked up our pace.  With the puck being tossed from end to end and shots stoned by each goalie, TCDMA would take advantage of a scramble of players around our goalie Makayla Beuerman to just get the puck in the net, the score was now tied 1-1.  Tough one gals!   This barn burner would continue as we needed the win to get the bye or otherwise we would play again later that night in the do or die semi final.  More shots were taken but both goalies shut the door to keep the deadlock 1-1.  With the time winding down, we would end the game in yet another tie.  Good game girls!

Since we had 2 ties and sitting in second place in our round robin play we needed to play in the do or die semi final later Saturday evening to earn our spot in the final on Sunday.

We would have a few hours off before our semi final action against Mt Brydges.  The time had come to show those Mt Brydges Cougars what Mitchell Meteors can really do!  With the ice cleaned and the roar from the crowd, the puck was dropped and off we go!  Right from the face off, you could see the determination in our gals that they wanted this game.  With a few minutes off the clock, Mt Brydges would score first but Erica Pletsch would answer right back by netting the puck off the stick of Brooklyn Gethke.  Awesome girls! Let’s keep this pace going!  The remaining of the period was a flurry of shots from Mitchell but that Cougars goalie kept them in the game and score 1-0 for us.  The second period started and with the drop of the puck we were off once again and playing in their end.  With our great defensive pairs of Meg Schoonderwoerd, Taya Cornish, Ava Gibbings and Brett Gethke they held the puck in on the blue line or got it right back in as quickly as it squeaked it to give our forwards the chances they needed to score.  Erica Pletsch took the puck on her stick and drove it towards the net to take a quick soft shot and some how it got behind the line to be called a goal!  Yes, way to go.  Just a few minutes later, Brooklyn Gethke would score to increase our lead 3-0 from the quick puck movement of Jaimie Badley and Arianna Catalan.  As play continued to be in their end, Alexa Hahn would be right there to tap that little black disk in the net as the goalie wasn’t able to slide over to block her shot.  Wow, you girls are really pouring it on!  Nicole Simmons and Emma French would earn the assists this time.  With the period, over, our gals had a 3-goal lead going into the final period.  The third period started a wee bit slower than the other two periods but our gals were still not willing to give up.  We had a few mad scrambles during this period and took a couple of penalties to give them the extra advantage.  While serving the one of our penalties, Mt Brydges pulled their goalie for a 6 on 4 player advantage and a quick shot from the point put them on the board.  They had cut our lead to 2.  As the period continued to wind down, Mt Brydges continue to fire shot after shot on our goalie Makayla Beuerman but she stood her ground and denied them time after time with lots of help from our gals to clear the puck away from our net.  A quick glimpse of the clock to see the time count down 10,9,8,7 and the cheer of the crowd, the buzzer sounded and we won the game 4-2. Great game girls, way to work together and hang on for the win!

With our win, we would face TCDMHA in the Final at 12:40 on Sunday for the Peewee B Championship and the gold medal.

Early Sunday morning, we received notification that our final game was canceled due to weather.  I know we were all disappointed as we wanted that gold but we can’t do much if the weather doesn’t cooperate with us.

Now, the girls will continue with a few more league games till the end of the month.  Next weekend we play two home games – first on Saturday in Monkton against Cambridge and Sunday afternoon in Michell against TCDMHA.  Both should be great games, so come on out and cheer on our Meteors!
