Your Neighborhood Credit Union Atom Rep Boys cap season with a sweet championship
The YNCU Meteors continued play Saturday afternoon in Midland and Elmvale as they locked in a semi final position and a chance to move into Sunday's final. The semi final game against a team that seemed more intent on causing our boys harm than about winning just fueled the Meteors as they stayed to their own game and cruised to a berth in the afternoon final. With that same mentality the boys remained on course and played around their opponents frustrations to capture the trophy of nature's delicious maple gift.

The first game of Saturday afternoon was with added difficulty as the YNCU boys were sent back to the dressing room just 1:42 into the second period. With a referee out with an injury the boys were left to spend a little over an hour contemplating the 1-1 deadlock they were in as they waited for a replacement ref. The goal from James McCarthy with Brock Boville's assist was a welcome change to the game and made that wait a little easier as the momentum swing stayed in the boys favor after play resumed. Vincent Voros, McCarthy and Josh French from Kellen Russworm's assist were all able to add goals as the boys defeated the Millbrook Stars 4-1. Unfortunately with a delay and a tournament spread over multiple arenas it meant a fast trip to Elmvale from Midland and jumping on the ice immediately for their final round robin game against the hometown Elmvale Coyotes. The boys didn't use it as an excuse though and went out with a strong game but kept finding themselves just a bit behind. With a 5-3 deficit late in the third the coaching staff did what we all knew the boys wanted and made the goalie pull to get back to an even tilt for a chance to move forward undefeated. With Hayden Beuermann out the Coyotes netted another to make the hill even steeper but there is still no such thing as quit in our boys hearts. With a win of the face off at center and Beuermann already at the top of the circles out he came again and this time it was the boys celebration. Two goals in the last couple of minutes meant that the boys were within one but only 20 seconds remained on the clock. It was a valliant push to the buzzer but time ran out and the hometeam was left to enjoy victory from their last game in the tournament. The 6-5 loss saw Boville net 2, Kyle Mills net 1 and Vincent Voros would also net 2 as the day not only put Voros to the 100 goal mark for the season but also saw him surpass the milestone.

The semi final game Sunday morning brought on a new face from the other division. The Penetang Flames had fallen to Mitchell's nemesis Kincardine Kinucks in the OMHA quarter finals but with close games in that series the YNCU Meteors knew that this wouldn't be an easy game. And easy it wasn't but scoring was not a problem as the boys commanded the scoring from puck drop to buzzer. Voros would continue to add to his scoring record, French and McCarthy would also contribute goals. Jack Small, Caleb Templeman and Lucas Roobroeck would also add markers while assisting contributions would come from Russworm, Jarrett VanBakel, Boville, Mills and Daniel Ogilvie. Rhett Terpstra would also be pivotal in both protecting his teammates and defending off the Flames as they lost their own composure during the 10-0 semi.

The final then was set as Mitchell would have a second game against the strong spirited South Muskoka Bears. Again Voros would facilitate the early lead and with additional goals from Roobroeck and Boville the boys would set themselves on a 5 goal advantage. The differential would prove too much for the Bears as they got caught up in frustration and took repeated penalties. The 5-0 win gave the boys the Maple Syrup Country Tournament Atom Rep Division title and more importantly solidified the team's unity as their season drew to a close.

The Your Neighborhood Credit Union Atom Rep boys of the 2016-2017 season will be fondly remembered by each other, coaches, parents and fans. They are all strong hockey minded boys but more off they always held themselves to as much or more accountability then their fellow teammates and everyone was an equal contributing factor no matter who's number made the scoresheet. Their coaches were always supportive and shared much skill with them and for that, Cain and Karl, the boys and their parents thank you! You have given the boys many hours of your time over the years and it is never unnoticed and we are all grateful for that. A thank you to Dale and his work for the team as well and to Nicole for her guidance to the boys through the season. Finally a thank you to the boys from me; I not only love to watch you play but am very passionate about your game. It makes me not only want to watch each and every shift of every game but it also causes me to cheer as loudly as I can (unfortunately too much sometimes). Forget being stars you are all Meteors already and it's a proud felling to watch you play each and every year. Thanks for the opportunity to let me tell your story!
