THE BANTAM LL’S WIN ROUND ROBIN WOAA PLAYOFF SERIES
After a tough battle with several talented teams, the Scotiabank Mitchell Bantam LL boys came out on top after their win in Teeswater on Saturday, March 7th against the South Bruce LL team.  This win put them in first place in the Maroon South division of the WOAA qualifying them for the WOAA Finals against the winner of the Maroon North division.

Mitchell and South Bruce hit the ice hard.  Neither team was willing to back down or allow the other any opening to take the lead.  The action was fast paced and there was zero opportunity for error by our boys.  South Bruce’s goalie was on fire as was his trapper.  It became very apparent early on that if we wanted to score we had to steer clear of this kid’s glove hand.  However, our goalie, Reid DEGROOT, was also on fire and he was determined to add another shutout to his repertoire.  Resilient defence was provided by Ben HART, Hayden ADAIR, Nic BAKER, Des FINLAYSON, and Kyle WETTLAUFER.  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, HART had to leave the game early as the blade on his skate snapped in half leaving him on the sidelines to cheer on his teammates.  The rest of the boys picked up the slack without question and continued to forge on.  ADAIR worked hard to keep the puck in their opponent’s end by positioning himself on that blue line and continually shooting it back where it belonged.  Nic BAKER brought his hard slap shot with him and was very persistent as he drilled shot after shot at every opportunity.  Surprisingly he wasn’t able to get that puck over the goal line, but it is only a matter of time before he succeeds.  FINLAYSON once again was on his game and made it very difficult for South Bruce to get that puck past him.  He also made some shots on net and did not quit working his hardest until the final buzzer sounded.  WETTLAUFER flew around the ice always being where he needed to be to prevent the goal.  A South Bruce player attempted a coast to coast goal as he beautifully deked out several of our boys, but was stopped in his tracks as WETTLAUFER was there and ready to pluck that puck right off of his stick.  The scoreboard was content to remain 0 to 0 to close off this first period but Jackson MACARTHUR was not satisfied with that so he brought that biscuit up to South Bruce’s net tossed a backhand saucer pass over to Jake MONDEN and MONDEN swatted it in, top shelf, pppichewwww, scoring Mitchell’s first goal of the game.  Moments later the period ended and the score was 1 to 0 us.

In period two the boys continued to play hard.  They were a united team tonight and each member contributed.  Connor LOUWAGIE had a few opportunities to shoot on net, he seized those breaks with some perfect shots, but South Bruce would not allow him to score.  Likewise, Anthony BEUERMAN had a few prospects, but he too was robbed of his efforts.  It wasn’t until three quarters of the way through the period that Zeke KOERT made a perfect shot up to the net and MACARTHUR tipped it over the goalie’s glove giving our Mitchell boys another goal and little bit of wiggle room.  WETTLAUFER also assisted with this goal.  The game wasn’t over yet though and DEGROOT continued to ward off several South Bruce shots as he was determined to keep our net safe.  The period ended 2 to 0 for us.

After a pep talk, some water and a little break, the boys came back determined to win this game.  Line-mates Eric DEARING and Tristan BEEHLER both wanted this win and did not let their team down as the provided non-stop offensive plays throughout the entire game.  At the ten minute mark Kurtis FORREST trekked right up in front of his opponent’s net, caught the rebound, shot it back at that goalie and SCORED!  The assist went to the BAKER twins, Nate and Nic.  Things were looking good for the Mitchell team until South Bruce decided it was their turn to cheer.  With 2 minutes and 17 seconds left on the clock they scored their first goal.  Now, anyone who has ever watched a hockey game before knows that the game is not over until it’s over.  Anything can happen in 2 minutes and 17 seconds, so this was not good for Mitchell, not good at all.  Fortunately, the team continued to play the same, they did not let this hiccup phase them whatsoever and they rallied together and finished off this game the same way they started it…united!  BUZZZZZZZ went the final buzzer of the night and finally the boys could celebrate.  They skated off the ice with a 3 to 1 win.  Great battle South Bruce.  Thanks for an awesome game.

Stay tuned for the dates of our WOAA Final games.
