YOUNG CANADA TOURNAMENT
The Lockhart Funeral Home Pee Wee LL’s finished off their year at the Young Canada Tournament in Goderich on March 21st and 22nd.

Game 1 – Friday, March 20TH vs. Goderich at 7:00 pm

The Meteors dominated right out of the gate on Friday night as they met up with their host team, Goderich, in the Maitland Recreation Centre.  They scored four goals right off the hop giving them a very strong lead at the end of the first period.  Jake WALKER started things off with the first goal of the night with the assist going to Will STEINBACH.  Goal number two belonged to Carter YOST and the assist went to Kole HUNT.  Cole WILTON owned number three and it was assisted by STEINBACH and the closer was provided by Ryker VANDENBROEK and assisted by WILTON and STEINBACH.  The period ended 4 to 0 us.  Goderich rallied back and scored early on in the second period.  WILTON responded with another goal at the end of the period with the assist going to Jackson THORPE and the period ended 5 to 1 us.  As the game neared the end, WILTON accomplished what all hockey players strive for in their hockey careers…he got himself a HATTY!!  Once again his goal was assisted by THORPE.  The final buzzer sounded and the Mitchell boys skated off the ice with a 6 to 1 win.  Player of the game was awarded to the talented and hardworking goalie, Brent SMITH.

Game 2 – Saturday, March 21st vs. Minto at 12:30 pm

Just after lunch, fans gathered at the Memorial arena to watch Mitchell take on Minto.  These two teams recently battled each other at the end of their series and each seized a win, so fans had to cheer hard to ensure the Meteors were the winners today.  Obviously, these are two very evenly matched teams and the scoreboard proved it as they were tied 0 to 0 at the end of the first period.  The second period got underway and Minto spent a great deal of time in our end of the rink.  SMITH made several good saves until finally the puck made its way down to Minto’s end.  WILTON grabbed the puck, pushed it around the back of the net and delivered it, top shelf, into Minto’s net giving Mitchell the lead.  Jesse JUBINVILLE snatched the puck quickly off of the next faceoff and attempted to get Mitchell another goal, but it wasn’t meant to be this time.  With only a minute and a half left on the clock, VANDENBROEK deked his way up the ice and shot the puck past their goalie.  The period ended 2 to 0 us.  After the flood, Mitchell seemed to fall apart a little bit and gave up three quick goals to Minto.  Minto had way too many shots on our net, but thankfully the red goal post was on our side as it deflected the puck away on one occasion.  Wade MONDEN and Riley MURRAY both had strong games and kept the Minto goalie on his toes with a few shots on his net.  At long last, YOST scored the equalizer with just two and a half minutes left giving the Meteors the boost they needed to keep digging.  Minto almost took the lead in the final minutes of the game as a couple of our own players nearly slid the puck into our own net, but thankfully that was not the case and the game ended in a 3 to 3 tie.

Game 3 – Saturday, March 22nd vs. Ilderton at 6:00 pm (actually it was 6:37 pm)

Mitchell and Ilderton ended up on the top of the heap in their pool, so it all boiled down to this last game.  The winner would play tomorrow in the semi-finals and the loser would go home.  Stevie DAUM made the long haul from his holiday in Montreal with a brief stopover in Oshawa (where the Mitchell Pee Wee AE team won the OMHA Championship) and then straight to his spot between the pipes for this third game.  Ilderton wasted no time taking the lead at the Maitland Recreational Centre less than two minutes into the game.  They played a lot of the period in our end and pelted DAUM with several shots.  THORPE made an awesome save as he slid across in front of our net and swept the puck away from an Ilderton player.  With less than a minute left in the first period, Jaden FAULKNER (who has been playing remarkably all weekend) tied up the game with the assist going to Denzyl FINLAYSON.  The buzzer sounded and the period ended tied 1 to 1.  Ilderton started off the second period in much the same fashion as the first and took the lead once again.  The Mitchell boys pulled up their socks and started to pass the puck around and make some good plays.  The result, YOST scored and VANDENBROEK assisted.  The game was tied up again.  Ilderton responded to this with not one but two more goals and ended the period 4 to 2.  The third period was rough, or should I say continued to be rough, but it wasn’t until this period that the sin bin became a serious hot spot for both teams.  Each team accumulated 16 minutes where several different players felt shame, or should have felt shame.  The good old fashion game of hockey went out the window and the final period ended up being a gong show.  Ilderton scored two more quick goals before this never-ending period was finally over and when the final buzzer of the day sounded we skated away with a disappointing 6 to 2 loss.

The boys finished off their season 15-16-7.  They participated in three tournaments and had the opportunity to play at Bud Gardens on the same ice as the London Knights.  These boys have all improved considerably from two years ago and had a fantastic year of hockey.  It was obvious that they had fun and it was a pleasure to watch them and cheer them on all season.  Great job boys!  They would not be where they are if it weren’t for the knowledge and dedication of their coaches, Richard Boyce, Jamie Daum, Tim Walker and Chris Wilton.  Thank you for another great season.  Now let’s hang up those skates and play ball!
