THEY FELL INTO A RUT
The Lockhart Funeral Home Pee Wee LL team played game number two of their playoff series in Blyth against the Blyth-Brussels Crusaders Burgundy on Wednesday, February 18th at the supper hour (6:00pm).

Brent SMITH took his place between the pipes while five of his teammates lined up and prepared for the puck drop.  SMASH!  They were off, directly to their opponent’s end of the rink and within 30 seconds Kole HUNT had already shot on their net.  Their goalie was on his game though and had no intentions of letting the Mitchell boys beat his team again.  Play moved down the rink and into Mitchell’s end.  Ryker VANDENBROEK played a tight defensive game, but despite all his efforts Blyth took the lead.  The boys briefly brought the play back to the Blyth end where Jake WALKER had a beauty shot on net but, before long, they took it away from us again.  SMITH worked so hard and at one point deflected the puck clear over top of the net.  Denzyl FINLAYSON also provided a tight D and helped keep the score close but Blyth ended the first period in their favour, 1 to 0.

During the second period Mitchell provided the Blyth goalie with one heck of a workout.  Mitchell occupied Blyth’s end for the majority of the 15 minutes firing shot after shot at that poor kid.  Carter YOST started off with the first shot on net followed by Solomon KOERT who dangled those pylons like a pro.  Unfortunately, neither biscuit would make its way over that goal line.  Blyth took the puck, for a brief moment, and managed to score their second goal off the rebound.  Mitchell was not going to let this happen again and they took back control of the game and descended on their rival’s net.   YOST shot again, followed by Jesse JUBINVILLE and Jake WALKER and then KOERT got in on the action and like a machinegun pelted that net minder over and over, but even with their tremendous effort the scoreboard would not co-operate and the period ended 2 to 0 for Blyth.

Mitchell opened the third period with sticks a blazing.  YOST continued to play hard and shot on net.  Wade MONDEN also tried to score as did WALKER with what looked to be the makings of a perfect top shelf goal.  The entire team worked so hard, but they just could not catch a break.  Will STEINBACH dug deep in the corners all game long going after that puck in an attempt to get it to their net.  VANDENBROEK finished off with not one, but two beauty clapper’s both of which were deflected by this goalie extraordinaire.  Mitchell skated away with a hard fought 2 to 0 loss.

Two nights later the team was on the road again to the Clinton barn where they met up with the BCH Ice Dogs 1.  Stevie DAUM took to the net and played flawlessly during the first two periods.  His back catching abilities proved extremely helpful as he gloved several of their shots.  Team captain Jackson THORPE worked his magic in our defensive zone, as usual, taking some of the pressure off of DAUM and moving that puck out of our end.  Seven minutes in YOST scored Mitchell’s first goal, unassisted, and less than a minute later Cole WILTON scored their second goal with the assist going to Jaden FAULKNER.  Riley MURRAY had a phenomenal game demonstrating his lighting speed up and down the ice and keeping the puck in his opponent’s end.  The boys were on a high going into the third period with a 2 to 0 lead, but suddenly things started to fall apart.  They lost their gas and in less than seven minutes BCH was up 3 to 2.  The final buzzer sounded and the boys skated away with another disappointing loss.

Sunday, February 22nd at 7:50 pm Mitchell will host the Wingham Ironmen.  Come cheer them on and help them get that win they deserve.
