Western Ontario Girls Hockey League Champions!
The Paul VanGerwen-Sunlife Atom Girls have had a remarkable season finishing with a record of 37-11-6 and winning the title of Atom C Western Ontario Girls Hockey League Champions and earning top honors in girls hockey!

Game #1

Tuesday March 24th was game one of a three game series for the Western Ontario Girls Hockey League (WOGHL) Championship, against league rivals the Lambeth Lancers on our home turf.
With the girls pumped full of energy to start this series, they met at the arena to find their jerseys hanging with their names above them in the Hawks dressing room and music to be played during their game, they were ready to go!  As our mighty Meteors made their way on the rink with a stare down to the opposing end, they got right to warming up their sticks and our goalie.

Face off, puck dropped and this game has started.  It didn't take long for our girls to show Lambeth that they meant business tonight by dominating the play.  With time ticking away on the clock as period one looked like it might end scoreless, Emma French would break the deadlock by netting the puck just pass the Lancers goalie to give us the lead.  Erica Pletch was by her side to give the assistance she needed.

With momentum still in our favor and a look of frustration from the other team, wingers Alyssa Edit and Jaelyn Mienen stood tall and interfered in their path way to our end to take the puck.  Our defensive pairs of Taya Cornish, Meg Schoonderwoerd, Ava Gibbings and Brett Gethke held their ground and assisted our goalie Makayla Beuerman to keep those Lancers off the scoreboard.  With time closing to end of the second period, Emma French would add to the lead from line mates Brooklyn Gethke and Erica Pletch.  Our Meteors were on fire and didn't seem like Lambeth could take the heat!

With just 12 minutes left in the third and final period of this game, the girls knew they had to continue to control the game as Lambeth would be ready to pounce if given the opportunity.  As the crowd was cheering, just waiting for the insurance goal to be scored, Erica Pletch did just that by changing our score to 3-0 from the great puck handling of Brooklyn Gethke.  Lambeth didn't back down as they were trying to figure out a play and they got the chance they needed to skate that puck right into our zone and caught our goalie off guard to get on the board and end the shutout streak.

Everyone was one the edge of their seats as excited Mitchell family and friends counted down with the clock to hear the buzzer sound game over.  The girls won, the girls won giving them the series lead and the confidence to take into the next night's game to bring home the big trophy. Final score was 3-1.

Game #2

After a long day of school and work, we all took what would hopefully be our final road trip to Lambeth this year for this very important game #2.   Wednesday night could have been anyone's game but our Meteors girls were going to win and finish off this series and prove they are the best team in the Atom WOGHL division.  Lambeth had been on top of this division all season but our high flying, super cool Meteors wanted the title.

Again as in the previous night our girls came out like gang bangers right from the faceoff.  You could tell this game was intense as both teams trying to get that first and most important goal.  Half way through the this period, Emma French would open the scoring and just a few minutes later, Taya Cornish would add to the lead with Jaimie Badley grabbing the assist. First period play ended with us up by 2.

After a little chat from the coaches and a roaring cheer from the fans, second period was well on its way.  Play was back and forth as nobody was willing to budge.  Emily Dearing and Charlee Feltz were aggressive and always trying to take the puck off those Lancers sticks.

From the puck movement up the ice and play making efforts of Erica Pletch and Emma French they would set Jaimie Badley up for a beautiful goal. Score now 3-0 for us but it wouldn't stop there as Erica Pletch would add another marker before the end of the period.

With all momentum in our back pockets, and things looking good that we wouldn't have to make the drive back for game 3, Taya Cornish would score unassisted to increase the lead to 5.

Time was winding down and our girls getting tried but still pressing on, Lambeth was able to score a couple of goals from some mad scrambles of players and sticks in front our goalie Makayla Beuerman to cut our lead to 3 but that was all that we were willing to give them.

Game ended and our girls showed what Mitchell Meteors girl power is all about earning them the Championship title of WOGHL Champions.

Congratulations girls on a fantastic season, you all rock and have earned it this year, as well as being Champions in both the Mitchell Girls and South Huron Pink on the Rink tournaments.  The girls are looking forward to their last challenge of the season.  They will be representing Mitchell at the Provincial tournament in a couple of weeks in Mississauga.  Let go show those other teams, how mighty we are!

A big thanks to our amazing and awesome coaching staff, Jamie Gethke, Jaime Gibbings and Dawn Pletch for all the time and energy you have given to our girls.

Good luck on your quest for Provincial gold.
