Atom Girls win WOGHL Atom C/HL Championship
The SunLife- Paul VanGewen Atom Girls brought home the Championship trophy on Sunday March 24/14 after a hard fought series against rivals St Clair Storm in a best 2 out of 3 game series.

The series started with the first game in Mooretown on March 16/14.  No scoring in the first period by both teams as the play was in center ice and neither team was giving each other room to skate.  St Clair got on the score board first with a couple of goals but Emma F was able to reach the back of the net to bring us within 1.  St Clair answered right back to take the 2 goal lead into the third.  Our girls backed off a bit and St Clair was able to get another one pass goaltender Makayla B to take the 3 goal lead.  With just over a minute left to play, Taya C knocked it off a St Clair stick and with the help of Jamie B and Emily H scored to give us our second goal of the game.  Game ended with St Clair taking the 1 game advantage in the series with a score of 4-2.
The second game was at home on Saturday March 22/14.  Again a strong start by each team as each team wanted the win.  Mitchell wanted the win to take the series to a game 3.  Play was back and forth by Mitchell and the girls dug hard to keep the puck in St Clair's end.  The game ended in a tie 2-2 with goals scored by Hannah E assisted by Maggie P (8) and Emma F.  Our 2nd goal was scored by Emma F assisted by Hannah E.  This meant the team would travel back to Mooretown for game 3 of the series.
St Clair was up 1 win on us in the series, making the Atom girls very determined to win the 3rd and final game. Mitchell needed to win the game in regulation time to take it to a sudden death 10 minute overtime to crown the champs of the series.
We traveled back to Mooretown on Sunday March 23/14 to  face off once again for the final game of the series.  Mitchell was pumped up and ready to play!
The Meteors hit the ice hard and fast fighting for the puck and their position and hungry for the win.  Mitchell kept the puck in the St Clair end and had many chances to score with Hannah E able to knock the puck in their net giving us the 1 goal lead after 1.  During the second period again our girls didn't back down and kept St Clair on their toes.  St Clair was able to get one by Makayla B to tie it  but Mitchell answered right back by a goal from Emma F assisted by Hannah E and Erica P to give us the 1 goal lead going into the third and final period.  Third period was packed with lots of action as neither team wanted to give up.  St Clair was able to break away with the puck and go in alone on our goaltender Makayla B and put it in the back of the net squaring it up at 2.  Mitchell kept the pressure on and had many shots on St Clair but their goaltender was up to the challenge.  With just a few minutes left in regulation time, Mitchell called for the time out to get a plan of attack in place.  Going into the last minute of the game, Mitchell dumped the puck into St Clair's end and pulled the goalie to get the extra attacker on and with 45 seconds left Emma F with the help from Erica P got the puck behind St Clair to take the lead.  Mitchell held St Clair for the remaining seconds of the game to take the win 3-2.
Since the series was tied with 1 win, 1 loss and a tie each, sudden death overtime was needed to decide the WOGHL Atom Girls C/HL champions.  Mitchell and St Clair battled hard but with some great defensive plays and a few keys saves from Makayla B with 3 minutes in to the overtime gave our girls the chance to get the puck out of our end and down the ice for Hannah E to pass to  Emma F to score the OT winner and seal the championship for the team.
Congratulations to the Atom Girls on a great series and to come back to take the win.  It was a great game to watch and you girls certainly kept us parents excited for the whole game.  Also a big thanks to the great coaches the girls had this year, we know they all have enjoyed playing for you.
The girls have an exhibition game this Thursday against Stratford to wrap up the season.
