Great start to playoffs
The SunLife - Paul VanGerwen Atom Girls have had a strong start to their home and home playoff series against St Clair and Zorra.
The girls have a 2 win, 1 loss, 1 tie record so far in this round of playoffs with 2 games remaining.
The team's first game was at home on Feb 7 against St Clair. Lots of shots were taken at the St Clair goaltender but we were not able to get anything pass. St Clair was able to get 4 goals in behind our net-minder Makayla B giving them the win 4-0.
The following weekend the team traveled to Embro to play the Zorra Fusion. With solid play from all players we were able to take the win 4-2. Goal scores were Hannah E and Erica P with 2 each, with Taya C, Emma F and Brooklyn G providing the help. Makayla B played a good game only allowing 2 in behind.
This past weekend the girls had 2 games, one on Saturday against Zorra at home and then on Sunday the team headed to Mooretown for a battle against St Clair.
Saturday's game was exciting with our girls playing a very defensive game not allowing Zorra many chances in our end. Erica P scored with help from Brooklyn G to give the home team the 1-0 advantage going into the second. In the second period, with Zorra having a few chances to score they were able to get 1 by Makayla B to tie the game up at 1 after two periods. The third period the girls started a little slow and Zorra scored within the first few minutes but the last 5 minutes of the game the Atom girls found the fire and and scored 3 goals to give us the lead and the win. Taya C, Hannah E, Erica P all scored with the assistance of Emma F. Makayla B played a solid game in net.
On Sunday the team traveled to Mooretown for a battle. Both teams were playing hard and the action was end to end. The first 10 minutes were played with no scoring for either team. During the second with pressure from our girls they were able to get a couple of goals with one goal scored on our power play. Emma F and Jamie B were the ones to find the back of the net with Erica P and Ava G giving them the puck. St Clair was able to get one in our net with a crowd of players from both teams in front of our goal tender to keep the score to a 1 goal difference. Mitchell had the 2-1 advantage going into the 3rd. The third period was filled with end to end action and lots of shots and saves made by both goal tenders. St Clair was able to get a lucky bounce and get it in our net with 3 minutes left in the game to tie it all up at 2. Neither team backed down and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Again Makayla B had a solid game making some great saves. What a great game for everyone to watch.
The girls next challenge will be this weekend with home to home games against BAD. Good luck girls and let's keep the momentum going.
