Going the Distance!
In true 2012 Atom style, the Mitchell Meteors maximized their game tally by stretching a 5 game series into 6 when both teams accumulated 5 points in 5 games.  Losing a tough one yesterday in Mitchell meant that they were forced to travel back down to Lambeth looking for that winning goal which would send them home victorious.

After playing 5 games (of which 4 of them were very close) the boys had figured out that the Lancers were a tough opponent that could beat if they played their own game.  Coming into Lambeth tonight though, the nerves of parents seemed much more frayed than any of the players who somehow managed to not feel the pressure of a must win game.

Out of the gate the boys appeared to be ready and sent a few shots Lambeth's way, but it was Duncan who was forced to make the better saves thoughout the first period in order to come out of the frame still knotted up at zero.

It was early in the second when Lambeth would capitalize on their solid passing game and get the puck into the Meteor end and in for a quick one goal lead.  Fortunately for Mitchell it was still early and there was no need to panic and only four minutes would lapse before Fenner would move the puck up to Eidty so that he could get a shot away.  While the Lancer goalie would make the initial save, McCorkindale was ready to pounce on the rebound and got the equalizer to even things up at one.  The rest of the period would see much of the play kept in the Meteor's end, but a combination of backchecking, solid defense and great saves (and some hockey luck) kept things tied at one going into the third.

As the 3rd period began, Mitchell looked a bit too relaxed and Lambeth had their chances.  The Meteors continued to play tough and generated a few great chances but weren't able to capitalize on them.  While it was beginning to look like this game may last through the period and into yet another overtime game, Mitchell poured it on and really forced Lambeth to shut them down.  But as quickly as the Meteors had their chance, Lambeth's forward broke out and up the ice where Vogels chased him down in time to prevent another quality scoring chance.  This gave new life to them yet again and McCorkindale fed Eidt up the wing where he forced his way to the net and forced the puck accross the line for the leading goal!  Excited, the boys looked at the clock and realized that there were still 40.7 seconds left and there would still be work to be done on the ice.  Remember, it ain't over 'til it's over... With an empty net starring them in the face and six Lancer attackers coming at them, they knew that the most important thing was to do everything necessary to keep out a last ditch effort from the home team.  And that's exactly what they did.  When the final attack came, Rauser was flying back to the puck and got called for interference - leading to the chance to ice the puck without repercussions.  When the puck successfully sliding down the sheet, the clock would expire and off to Stirling we go!

All lines were ready for action tonight as they had learned from the previous games that the Lancers were just as anxious to move on as they were.  Tough battles were won and lost along the boards and in the corners, with another teammate ready to cover if the puck got by them.  And when the biscuit made it even deeper, Duncan was ready to pounce or deflect the attack away from his net. Solid team play boys!

Congratulations!
