PeeWee Rep - Vosper Leads Peewee Reps to Regional Silver Stick Championship
Submitted By Trevor Russwurm on Monday, December 31, 2018
Backed by Jared Vosper's five points (3G 2A), the Hoegy's Farm Supply Meteor Peewee Reps captured the Regional Silver Stick Championship in Kincardine this past weekend with an 8-3 victory over league rival Saugeen Shores Storm.  This marked the third consecutive year for victory by a Mitchell Peewee rep team.  Kellen Russwurm also chipped in with three points (1G 2A) to help pace the attack.

Saugeen would open the scoring midway through the first period, knocking in a loose puck in the crease.  The Meteors would answer back a mere 9 seconds later as Vosper would net the first goal of his hat trick.  Saugeen would regain the lead early in the second.  Mitchell would then run into penalty trouble, leading to a 5-on-3 man advantage.  The locals would kill off one penalty, but not the second as the Storm would score to take a 2-1 lead with 2:42 remaining in the second period.  Brayden Glauser promptly took the team on his back for the remainder of the period, scoring two goals to even the score at 3-3 after two.  Drawing assists were Russwurm and Vosper.  Having the momentum entering the final period of this exciting tournament final, the locals struck first as Russwurm would score the go-ahead goal from Josh French.  Seconds later Vincent Voros would score from Vosper and the Meteor train was starting to roll at high speed, adding three more insurance goals to help secure the victory.  Vosper would complete his hat trick assisted by French and Glauser, and Kyle Mills would add an empty-netter from Russwurm.  Goaltender Hayden Beuermann was solid all weekend, and Peewee AE goalie Keagan Meinen was called up for the final as insurance.  The locals now move on to the International Silver Stick Peewee 'B' Championship being held in Forest, ON January 11-13th.

Tournament play began for the Meteors on December 27th vs the Listowel Cyclones.  Voros opened the scoring early in the first period, assisted by Rhett Terpstra and Daniel Ogilvie.  The teams would then play scoreless hockey until early in the third when Glauser redirected a Russwurm shot from the point to take a 2-0 lead, with Jared Vosper also drawing an assist.  Listowel would score moments later to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Kyle Mills would snipe a goal from the top of the circle from Caleb Templeman to regain the two-goal lead.  Jarrett Van Bakel would add the empty netter insurance goal from Lucas Roobroeck to end in a 4-1 final.

After a hearty team lunch at the nearby Kings Pearl Pub, the Meteors faced the Kincardine Kinucks for the second time in less than a week.  Despite giving up a lot in size, the Kinucks battled hard for two periods, with the score tied 1-1 going into the third.  Vosper would add his second unassisted effort early into the final frame to pull ahead, and the Meteors then exploded for three more quick goals from Voros, Mills, and Vosper’s third for the hat trick to take a commanding 5-1 lead.  Drawing additional assists were Russwurm and Van Bakel with a pair.  Kincardine would score once more before the final buzzer to end in a 5-2 Mitchell win.

Following a day off on Friday the 28th, the locals resumed action at 12:30pm on Saturday the 29th vs league rival Saugeen Shores Storm.  The Meteors came to play hard, outshooting their opponents considerably in a narrow 2-1 victory.  Vosper scored the opening goal midway through the first period, assisted by Ogilvie and Glauser.  Saugeen would tie it up with a shorthanded goal with 42 seconds left in the first.  Following a scoreless middle frame, Voros would score the game-winning goal early in the third from James McCarthy to guarantee the Meteors a berth in the finals on Sunday.

Saturday afternoon’s last round-robin game vs winless Tavistock would not be a factor in the standings for the locals, but after a hearty buffet lunch at Kincardine Boston Pizza they came out firing again with an 8-0 victory to go undefeated in round-robin play.  Vosper would open the scoring in the first minute of play from Mills and Russwurm, and the trio would connect again on the second goal early in the next period.  Roobroeck would snap a hard shot from the top of the circle into the top corner and Vosper would finish off the hat trick from Brandon Dietrich to lead 4-0 after two.  The locals would add four more insurance goals in the third to put the game out of reach, as Terpstra, McCarthy, Van Bakel, and Glauser all found the back of the net.  Drawing additional assists were Van Bakel, Mills, and Voros.
