Atom HL Girls WOGHL Champs
The JP Uniac Insurance Atom HL Girls team wrapped up a fantastic season with a well deserved championship after back to back 3-0 wins over Tillsonburg.

Game one went Saturday March 24th in Mitchell as the locals looked to avenge a 2-0 loss in their last meeting.  Strong defensive play by the Meteor's blueliners Hayden Uniac, Addy Wolfe, Rylee Kipfer and Peyton Vanderkuylen along with goaltender Ally Vogels would keep the Tillsonburg offence contained all series as their strong play was showcased in both games.  Two scoreless periods would set the table for a strong Meteor finish as Brooklynn French would rip a wrist shot past the Tillsonburg goalie just 2 minutes into the third to break the tie.  Assists on the goal would come from linemates Tegan Mace and Alissa Insley.  The close checking affair would continue until Mace powered home a rebound to add some insurance with French and Uniac earning assists.  French would strike again, this time into the empty net with just over a minute remaining, Mace and Insley again earning helpers.  The girls celebrated a 3-0 win on home ice to take game 1.

Sunday night in Tillsonburg the teams would match up again.  The line of Andrea Kelly, Haileigh Templeman and Rachel Haefling played the role of the checking line, matching up with Tillsonburg's scorers and successfully keeping them out of harms way with a strong two way game.  Again the teams would battle to a scoreless first period.  The Meteors would draw first blood as Addy Wolfe would blast a point shot through heavy traffic to put Mitchell up a goal.  Mace would get the assist and provide a screen on the shot.  Much like game one, the teams again would battle back and forth.  Vogels again stood tall in the Meteor's net and made several key saves to keep the lead secure.  Tillsonburg would pull their goalie for an extra attacker, however a strong forecheck eventually paid off as Mace would out muscle her opponent and add an empty netter to double the lead.  As the girls have shown all year they continued to battle until the final buzzer.  With just over a second left Haefling would sneak a final goal through to finish 3-0 Meteors for the second night in a row.  A well deserved finish to a great season for these girls who showed great character and hard work all season.

Congratulations to these girls who had a great season of hockey and many great accomplishments.  The team finishes up the 2017-2018 with a 25-17-6 record.  Along with their WOGHL Division III title, they earned Championships in both the BAD Girls Tournament and the Walter Gretzky Tournament in Brantford, as well as being finalists in the Annual Mitchell Girls Hockey Tournament.
